I am confused, I have many home users for inside the same house, I also have a few family members outside the house, different locations. I have added them as friends, and also home users. They have had to create plex accounts to work. Can I not just add all family to home users and they access using the plex app on devices where ever they are? They got a message saying cant stream. They then paid themselves for streaming. Does this not cover under my monthly account?
First, what are you trying to accomplish? If you setup your external users as home users, then they are tied to your account and will need to log in to their clients using your userid/password. My guess is that you don’t want to do this.
If you want to setup your external users as friends, then they need their own Plex account. The account is free unless they want to take adavantage of certain features, for instance mobile sync or certain clients. They will use their own userid/password, not yours.
Once you set them up as a friend and you select which of your libraries, or all, that you want them to have access to, they will be able to sign on using their userid/password and then select your Plex media server.
This assumes that you have setup your Plex for remote access (see Settings | Remote Access under Server).
I think that is a good start. Next question…
