using a ps3 controller with rasplex on rpi3

hi very new to rasberry pi and wondering if it was possible to use a ps3 controller with rasplex? If you could point me in the direction of any useful resources or guides on setting up controllers and inputs i would appreciate it. thanks

I don’t think a PS3 controller is suitable for use with RasPlex, due to the non-standard method of pairing that Sony uses.

For most other Bluetooth devices pairing can be done entirely over the Bluetooth connection, but that’s not how it works with Sony PS3 controllers. Instead initial pairing is done by connecting the controller by USB to the PS3 console, which then writes its own Bluetooth address into the controller’s memory, so the controller will use that address to auto-connect with the console in future sessions. Thus a PS3 controller is unable to pair with any other Bluetooth device, without undergoing such a procedure again, so as to get the new device’s Bluetooth address stored for future connections.

Needless to say, this non-standard method is not widely implemented apart from Sony’s PS3 equipment.
I do know that there’s a PC program under Windows which can be used to do the procedure, and there are drivers for Windows and for Android which can connect with a PS3 controller once it has been paired via that PC program. But I’m not aware of any such programs or drivers for other platforms (such as the RPi).

Instead I strongly recommend getting one of the many cheap RF-connected mini keyboards available.
I use several different such myself, to control my RPi1, RPi2, and other consoles and set-top boxes.
Most such keyboards are smaller than the PS3 controller, and in my opinion more convenient to use.
They also allow you to do some things that would be hard to achieve with a gamepad, such as entering search strings, or quick-jumping in a library section list using the shift+letter shortcuts.

thanks i knew it might be a longshot, i just wanted to see if i could utilize what i had on hand lol. Any particular brands of bluetooth remotes or keyboards you guys recommend?

I use this WiFi keyboard because all but 2 of the keys work with rasplex. I remap a couple to better functionality. I haven’t tested any bluetooth keyboards with the rPi3 yet.

Forget keyboards, just use your TV remote, most modern TV’s are CEC enabled.

Unfortunately I learned about Cec after buying a new Samsung TV that does not have cec or anynet+

See this topic http://openelec.tv/forum/104-bluetooth-remotes/24473-ps3-remote-controller-in-openelec-alternate-solutions.

The OpenELEC addon referred to in the original post is not available for Rasplex, Plex uses a totally different system for this.

If you are feeling confident, have a go, and please post back your results.
