Using Plex with new AV 5.1 set up - how?

Sorry guys - none too techy but need some help please.

Currently I have all my DVD’s ripped and stored on my Windows 7 PC as MP4 files.

I have used a Chromecast dongle together with my iPad and the Plex app to stream these to our HD TV.

However, I am updating the whole AV set up to use a Pioneer (WiFi) enabled AV Receiver and Blu Ray player complete with 5.1 surround sound.

How can I set up the system to enable me to stream the films via the receiver and enjoy 5.1 sound?

As a separate issue.:

As well as the MP4 files (converted in Handbrake) in addition I have all the films original rips in folders too (Video TS, Audio TS files). I understand that MP4 cannot be played directly on a DVD player - how do I write these original rips onto a blank DVD so they can be played like the original?

Thanks in advance.

Anyone help please?

So many options…

I have a Roku, BluRay, PS4 and computer connected by HDMI to the receiver, and all of them have a Plex app. It’s possible your BluRay has an Plex app you can download, if not, perhaps you could enable the DLNA server in PLEX if the BluRay player has DLNA support. I’m not familiar at all with a Chromecast or its capabilities, but I would think you can connect it directly to the receiver by HDMI. Usually best to connect any device directly to the receiver by HDMI and then connect the TV using the HDMI out from the receiver to get surround sound. I have found surround sound is not guaranteed if you connect the device to the TV.

When you converted the DVD’s to MP4, I hope you kept the original surround audio as well as a stereo track. I’m by no means a Handbrake expert, so I can’t really help you there.

Almost any DVD burning software can make DVD videos from those folders and files, and there are lots of free ones out there. I have used ImgBurn for years, Google will help you find that one as well as other choices.

Thanks - my Plex server appears on the blu ray player screen and when I click on it I get the list of folders (home videos, photo, movies etc) but when I click on the movies folder (or whatever) I get the ‘loading’ screen for a few seconds but it comes back empty.

Also on the app.plex.tv on my laptop the BR player does not appear in the devices?

5.1 can be totally confusing when it comes to Plex. And it all depends on how you configure it. In general the default PCM will work fine, as long as your AV supports PCM, if not, then you need to enable Audio passthrough on whatever device is plugged into the Reciever. My setup is as follows.

Roku connected via hdmi, and then TV audio out(Fiber) connected to my Stereo Receiver, and then on my TV it has a Audio out option which you can enable or disable PCM, I disabled it and I am trying it, however PCM has some benefits that disabling you will lose.

I think you are using your bluray as your client, this may limit you as to what you are capable of outputting, however you will need to input 5.1 audio into your reciever, and there are a LOT of options here, how is your bluray connected to your reciever?

Oh, and not all DLNA players(Bluray is probably using DLNA) are compatible, it is possible your bluray player will not work properly. I would recommend getting a different client for this, as I have never even attempted through a player, and I don’t think it will be fully supported. Also some bluray players can detect that media is not legal material and that could also be part of your problem.

Thanks chaps - will read/study/check these posts/set up and come back…
