Various Artists Issue

I apologize profusely, but I was unable to find an answer to a topic that may have already been broached. From time to time a track or two from an album (Music only) will create a separate entry and icon on my recently added homepage. I can usually just re-enter the Artist, title, sorting title and one of them will create the merge I’m looking for. Recently I added a soundtrack with 46 songs. 1-22 of them appear under one icon and the other 23-46 appear under another. I’ve tried everything I can think of to get them to merge and they just refuse. Same artwork, same artist (various artists), same title, same sorting title, same year. I’ve checked for tags that might not line up, but everything is blank. I have another entry in the same series (there are five listed as such; The Peaky Blinders Soundtrack - Season 1, 2, etc) and all 44 songs on that one line up nicely under the same icon. It’s not the end of the world, but it’s a bit frustrating. I’ve checked for spelling, invisible spacing and nothing seems to work. If anyone has any ideas I’m all ears. Thanks very much in advance. - John

Could you produce an overview like the following, showing both all relevant meta tags, as well as the file names and the folder structure where those files are stored?

(the above was made with mp3tag, using a customized column configuration)

Hi Otto –

Thanks for trying to help me. I downloaded MP3Tag, but couldn’t figure out how to produce this view. I’m afraid of changing the files in anyway or worse, deleting them inadvertently. I’m thinking this view will probably reveal the difference between the two halves of the file if I could at least look at it, but I could use the actual steps to reach this point. I’m sorry if I come across as dense. Thanks very much. - John

Please take a look at the documentation of mp3tag. Mp3tag Help - First Steps

I recommend you to make a file copy of a few albums from your collection, to experiment on.

How does this look? I can’t see any reason why it won’t line up in Plex honestly. It lines up fine in this software. The Album Artist field is blank here where yours reads Various Artists, but it reads the exact same on both entries in my DB…Still baffled…

Just so we’re 1000% clear on what I’m trying to accomplish, Season 2 lines up under one icon perfectly, but Season 1 has two entries as shown below. Thanks Otto!..

None of your files has the “Album Artist” meta tag. With this being blank, Plex starts to “guess” what the album artist is.
Fill it with Various Artists

Your system of storage is missing a crucial folder level – that of the album artist.

/Music <-- Plex is looking at this folder!
   /Various Artists
      /Peaky Blinders Soundtrack Season 1
         _tracks_

You might want to add the column for the disc number as well.

Thanks Otto. I don’t add the disc number, which was also blank, because I renumber them to make sure they all migrate to one column under a single file. I do this with every multi disc collection. There are never two #1’s. In this case number 23 would have been number 1 on disc 2. Anyway, I’ll try your suggestion to add Various Artists, but what doesn’t add up to me is this never comes up with any other multi disc CD. In this particular case, the actual artist for each track comes up no problem and this should have been taken care of under edit various artists/artist no? Then I guess what needs to happen is I rename the folder I’m experimenting with and add it to the main database before deleting the old one if this works. I’m not really sure who to edit the actual file I’d normally keep. I’m sorry if this is coming across all disjointed. I know you are probably helping a bunch of other people as well. Thanks again, and I’ll circle back if I can’t figure this out. Much appreciated!..
