still waiting for iphone video upload features 8->

Why this?

(Security) When server is signed in, clients must be signed in as well, even if they are on the * * LAN or on localhost. (#3819)

One of the greatest things about Plex was being able to just use clients on a local network with local servers with no issues. It would be nice if that were an option, not a requirement.

It is being looked into to allow for old Plex clients eg LG Medialink

This is a complete step in the wrong direction. Because now when our internet goes down or Plex’s network / sign in system goes down again we will be locked out from using our Plex. Just like you did requiring the pin on ATV I feel this can hurt us in the long run. I understand security but if I am on the same local network I should not require a sign in period and be able to access my media without issue.

The Plex Devs are fully aware of this and my understanding is that Plex clients and the server do / should cache the credentials and so an internet outage or plex.tv outage should not impact the access - so long as you are not switching users.
Any evidence of this not happening (i.e. the caching of credentials) should be raised as an issue on the relevant forum with diagnostics / screenshots / logs

With Plex Media Server version 1.1.0 at this moment, if the server is signed out then there will be no need for the client apps to authenticate. This of course would only allow the server to be accessible within the local network

I’m in the not really caring if creds are cached or not. I want to be able to run credless if necessary without having to mess w/ the state of my account login. I’ve been having to go piecemeal and update all my integrations to login vs. just calling the Plex API for things as I remember or see things not working correctly. It’s annoying. I’m not sure what is being accomplished with this and why it isn’t an option vs. a forced “feature.”

It is fairly straightforward. The server signs in to your plex.tv account within settings / server / general
All you plex client apps sign in to the same account
Any old plex client app eg LG Medialink that is not capable of signing in - you reserve a fixed IP Address for that device (DHCP Reservation or Static IP outside DHCP Range but on same subnet) and with version 1.1.2 or later (1.1.3 just got released), you enter the local IP of that device in Server / Settings / Network / Show Advanced :
List of IP addresses and networks that are allowed without auth

If you are using Plex Home and have managed users then the requirement to authenticate was already there before

Updating this thread with the latest on the LG Medialink issue

The issue with the LG TV Medialink software has now been identified and a workaround is outlined below. The more recent LG TV Smartshare does not have the problem

For LG Medialink, you need to have two IP Addresses specified in the List of IP Addresses and Networks Not Requiring Auth field, the IP Address of the LG TV and the IP Address of the Plex Media Server.
Note: comma separated IP Addresses and no space characters to be entered

If the server has more than one network interface active (not really recommended), then all the IP Addresses need to be entered.

A fix is being worked on and will be released in a future version of Plex Media Server. Meanwhile this is the recommended solution

For LG Smartshare - it is sufficient to just have the LG TV IP in the
List of IP Addresses and Networks Not Requiring Auth

Note that these IP Addresses need to be DHCP Reserved or Static outside DHCP Range
