Just purchased a lifetime subscription to express my support for this platform. I am also a proud owner of a DS214play.
Edit: Also purchased iOS and Windows 8 apps. This is how much I care! :)

Anyone got any thoughts on this? Or maybe got some more information?
Taken from a review posted Aug 27, 2014 on TweakTown
"As many of you know, the big advantage of the Intel Evansport platform is the hardware transcoding feature built into the SoC. Of course, this plays into the hands of the people over at Plex, one of largest and most popular media servers available to support the feature. As of today, as you can see in the image above with CPU usage upwards of 90%, it is not supported.
Not all is lost though, as Synology has taken the issue upon themselves and enabled a custom build of ffmpeg to allow hardware transcoding on their own platform. Judging from the image above, and the noticeable improvement on CPU usage down to 23%, we can say it works quite well."

Does this just work automagically or how is it implemented?
I suppose this is just showing, that there exists a ffmpeg port by Synology for the Evansport Platform. So it is still up to Plex to incorporate.
// Edit
But since Synology has not released their modifications, chances of this actually happening are slim.
This is something however i'd really want in a Plex 10.
news?

Synology released all their source code before many months. It's time for Plex to get these changes incorporated in their software

It doesn't work like this. Synology released their changes for a ridiculously old version of ffmpeg. Plex uses a version much more recent. Porting this code is no easy task, and that amount of work needs to be justified in the platform. Synology, the ones you actually spent your money on, doesn't consider porting this code to newer versions of ffmpeg. It's unfair to then decide it's Plex's task (whose userbase for this change is by necessity smaller than Synology's and who're profiting way less from them) to do it.
The decision to port it is not a trivial one. Porting it means maintaining that code in future versions, something that also should be Synology's job.
Incidentally, "porting additions to new ffmpeg" is something anybody can do. You could, or you could pay someone to do it for you. Perhaps if all these people who're on the line on whether they should get a lifetime subscription decided not to and paid a developer to port it, everybody would benefit.
Code has owners, this code is Synology's and they've released for a version from too long ago. They should update it and maintain it (since they own the black box it communicates to, in the end).
So a question to all messing here around. Do we have any kind of feedback from the plex team, either here or in the synology forum?
It would be nice to know if they consider our issue or don’t.
+1 for hardware transcode support on DS214play
Transcoding would be much appreciated
Ja tack, Vi har väntat länge nu…
Yes please, we waited along time now.

+1 for full support!
Yes I know it is hard, but we would be VERY happy with it.
+1 for this (and I liked the first post) ... I just signed up for PlexPass just to show my support
+1 for this as well. I already have a working solution using a very high powered i7, but i would like to be able to offload some of my plex users to a ds214play as well.

+1 +1 +1......
Plex is a great software ....using it few years now...but is almost useless in NAS/mobile scenario without transcoding. Who is still watching 480p movies ???? SRT subtitles is also a factor. Non-english part of the world is left out with no reasonable solution....we have some dollars to spend for PP also....so please consider tuning transcoding and better different codepage subtitles support.....
Not only number of platforms matter.....You've done a good job here.....its time to tune it up.
+1!

Same here, having this would be awesome!
This link has probably been posted somewhere but people have been able to recompile more recent versions of ffmpeg with the evansport support:
