Video playback is suddenly blurry

Server Version#: 1.27.1.5916
Player Version#: 4.84.1

All of a sudden today my videos got a bit blurry, especially with regards to subtitles. It isn’t affecting my mobile, just the web player in Chrome.
This has happened before, and I knew that it decided for some ungodly reason to stream in a lower resolution than native, so I went to change it … only to find this option suddenly missing from the player now.
I went into the player settings and forced everything to “Maximum”, but this didn’t have any effect.
I also tried restoring my settings to default without any change.
A quick look through the logs shows that it’s trying to stream in 720p or lower for everything I play on the web player. I’m on a LAN with the server and have a 2.5g network connection between my PC and the server, so bandwidth is not a problem.

Where can I find the settings to restore my player to native resolution playback?

Edit:
I opened a movie and I got an video quality option. It’s set to “Original”, and it seems to be fine.
Went back into the original videos that were giving me issues and it’s set to “Convert to 1080p HD (Maximum)”. The video is already 1080p, so clearly it’s trying to convert something that doesn’t need to be converted.

I’ve already re-analyzed the media in this library without any change.

Edit 2 (Solution):
Seems to be a resurgence of this issue: Web Client 3.83.1 no longer shows Quality in Playback Settings - #23 by evanl10
Running in Incognito mode provided the same results.
I tried an entirely different browser and it worked.
Signed out, cleared my cache, and it’s back to normal now.

Can confirm that the problem is still there for me as well on multiple machines. Using web or Windows application.

If you enabled subtitles, these could be the very reason why a transcode is necessary. The Web app only supports SRT subtitles for direct play. If your subtitles are e.g. PGS or VOBSUB, then the server has no other choice than to “burn” them into the video picture, which = transcoding.

Do also keep in mind that Plex in the web app doesn’t support any other video codec than H.264/AVC.

Download and install “Plex for Windows/Mac/Linux” (link below) and repeat the test with that.
