Great, happy to help. Thanks for your time Chuck!
One final request if I may?
Have you tested this with the current 1.23.1 Plex Pass version?
There were a lot of small fixes put in. (1.23.0 represented a huge change in our toolchain)
Interesting - my software isnāt showing an update but the site does. Let me see if I can manually update it quick. Unfortunately the FreeBSD port hasnāt been updated in almost a month
Will report back.
Ok, I have updated to 1.23.1.4528 & changed Scheduled Tasks to run starting in 3 minutes. This should generate a whole host of thumbnails for media that has been added over the last few days - I have already checked a few pieces of media to ensure they donāt have thumbnails and will ensure they have thumbnails after the Scheduled Tasks are complete.
Then I will add some more media and check the thumbnail status of that media.
Thanks.
Iāve submitted the bug report to engineering just in case.
We can close it if the issue is resolved.
are you seeing thumbnail generation?
Yes - thumbnail generation has worked for all the media that has been added over the last day and a half - it is now cycling through the same files that it always does during the Scheduled Task run - it seems like there might be issues with these files and it canāt generate thumbnails for them.
This is the same behavior I was seeing before, jury is still out on thumbnail generation after the Scheduled Task run⦠Iām thinking the Scheduled Task run should be complete in the next 10-15 minutes.
Okā¦
If there are issues with specific files then it might be a different problem which will need to be written differently.
I will update the trouble ticket for engineering to review.
Please do snap from fresh logs so they can see whatās happening as it occurs.
There are issues where Plex can not generate thumbnails for certain files - examples include Hit & Run, Ben-Hur, Robocop, Memento, Thundercats S1E1, The Lion King. (There may be others, these are just the ones that I recall seeing from the GUI interface when the task is running.) It attempts these every Scheduled Task run.
Scheduled Tasks run completed.
I added some new media - Under The Dome S1E1 - thumbnails were not generated.
I have attached some new logs - hopefully they help but there was a pretty big error at one point that seems to have flooded the logs with the following:
May 19, 2021 01:33:49.228 [0x807541a00] ERROR - [Transcoder] [aac @ 0x802c1cb00] decode_band_types: Input buffer exhausted before END element found
May 19, 2021 01:33:49.228 [0x807541a00] ERROR - [Transcoder] Error while decoding stream #0:1: Invalid data found when processing input
Two attachments - I tried to grab logs after the Scheduled Tasks completed, but before new media was added - that is the 01-36-43 bundle.
The 01-38-11 bundle is the logs after Scheduled Tasks completed & after new media was added.

Thatās why they arenāt generating. There is corruption in the media file.
There are a few ways to resolve this.
- Attempt to remux (mkvtoolnix) to rewrite missing header information
- Re-encode (quick pass matching bitrates)
I have no issues playing any of those files(Hit & Run, Ben-Hur, Robocop, Memento, Thundercats S1E1, The Lion King), seeking through them, etc⦠But I did just confirm they are missing thumbnails.
I donāt particularly care about 5 movies out of 2600 that canāt generate. I care that thumbnails arenāt generated for newly added media after the Scheduled Task runs.
Playing the files (in VLC) is much different. VLC will simply drop the frame(s) and youāll never see it.
PMS (FFMPEG) is not as tolerant because itās transcoding and not rendering for display (what VLC does)
I am playing them through Plex. No issues.
Direct Play?
Please grab that log so Engineering can see it too.
Looks like direct play to me, but audio transcoding for Ben-Hur, dependent upon client.
Sorry, which log? For playing one of these files? Where can I grab logs for the web client, or the windows client?
Server logs please (so we can see what PMS decided to do)
Itās clear that the transcoder was never invoked so the bad data in the file was never seen by PMS (down that deep) until thumbnail generation began
Engineering might call this a media curation problem and suggest re-encoding/ remuxing the problem. We will see what they say.
Sure thing - here is another log bundle generated while I play Ben-Hur via Plex for Windows 1.31.1.2262.

I do want to make sure the intent of the bug report is clear though - I donāt necessarily care about those files not having thumbnails - they are a drop in the bucket - the real issue (for me) is that thumbnails arenāt generated for new media.
Thanks for all your help with this.
Itās 3am here for me and I need be back up at 8.
It looks like some progress with thumbnails has been made?
Please let me know if it does get the rest of them ?
