Hello,
I have a question about feature “Video Preview Thumbnails”. It looks like a good feature but I dont have enough space on my system HDD. But I have lots of space on other HDDs. So my question is if there is some easy ways how to change location of these thumbnail files to another HDD. Do PLEX have some settings that can do that or is there some easy way how to do that?
I have PLEX on Windows.
Video Preview Thumbnails are stored in the Plex Data Folder.
You can relocate the entire Plex Data Folder to a new location.
See [HowTo] An extended guide on how to move the Plex data folder on Windows.
Note that the drive must be local and NTFS format. Network drives and ReFS, ExFAT, etc are not supported.
I wonder what solution is better. Plex register edit or simlink? Simlink looks easier and not require restart does it have some downside?
What makes you think so?
The server has to be shut down when making either change.
When done right, you won’t lose anything.
Really? Why exactly do you need to restart? I thought its because of registry edit. But if you shutdown Plex and Plex update servíce, copy metadata, make simlink and start Plex and Plex update services it should work fine.
Please read the linked post thoroughly.
If you follow it exactly, you will retain all your server data. No need to start over.
OK I did the registry editor solution and its working. I have one more question about this thumbnails generator. Is there some information how much thumbnails generation left to complete whole library? Something like 750/1000 movies finished or 75% complete?
And maybe one more… if you change movie file (for better quality like 1080p to 4k for example) will the generator automatically generate new thumbnails?
No.
Yes.
See Settings → Library → Generate video preview thumbnails. The choices are Never; As a Scheduled Task; and As a Scheduled Task and when media is added.
Scheduled Tasks run during the hours configured in Settings → Scheduled Tasks.
Additional details are available in Plex Documentation → Server Settings.
