I have pretty much switched my media setup to one that uses Chromecast and a tablet (iOS). Essentially this is to make it wife / kid friendly.
I had Emby Server running on unRAID (Docker) and the wife (much like Netflix etc) just fires up Emby app, picks something to watch and boom. Job done.
I kept getting nagged though about black bars around videos. These are typically 1080p and I’ve explained these are supposed to be that way (ie original source) but to no avail. Everyone wants the screen “filled”. I ad checked the transcoding settings in the Emby server to force to resolution of the tv, but I couldn’t see an option to. I also couldn’t see an automated box to select. The forum to date has not been helpful.
So I have tonight tried Plex. Installed the Server in unRAID Docker (as I had done Emby previously) and fires up a movie. Cast it to the tv, no issue … EXCEPT … the black bars. I have trawled the Plex settings and just like Emby, no setting seems to be there. There is much talk about overscan settings on the web but none of these settings can I find …
This was easy when running Kodi as I set the Kodi display settings to run in 16:9 Stretch (or whatever it was). I’m being hampered from moving back to Kodi as I can’t launch Netflix (use openelec) free to air apps etc from there.
Is there a solution to this in Plex or an option I’m missing??

Hi All,
Everyone wants the screen “filled”…
ASPECT RATIO MURDER!
Look at them with disgust…
to your children say: “I can’t believe you came from my loins…”
to your wife say: “is it time we started dating other people?”
to family and friends: “you can be replaced, you know…”
B)
Plex Media Player (top of the forum/downloads/get an app) does let those lesser humans mangle/murder aspect ratios. ONLY in TV View Mode and don’t show them how to do it. Tell them you’re not going to get involved in the homicide of a perfectly good aspect ratio. Also tell them to watch the content, not the black bars… they’ll enjoy the material more.

I have just got around to trying your suggestion (following the most recent round of nagging).
I installed the Plex Media Player on IOS and ran it in TV mode. All good so far. Unfortunately, once in there I cannot find the setting you are referring to?
The interface in the app seems very basic with little to no “Advanced Settings” which I would expect an option like this to be?
Is it possible this option is only available in the Windows version of PMP?
Sorry but I have the same Problem with my Sony TV, with my old NAS (Twonky7) or the standard Mediaplugin of my new NAS (QNAP) it shows all videos stretched, but the Sony Plex App show’s it unstretched. The button on the remote which controls this is disabled when the PlexApp is running. The TV is NOT an Android Device, so I don’t know which kind of Plex App this is. It is listed in the avaible Apps Section of Sony. Is there really no way to control this with the plex server? And if this is realy the case, can I somehow transcode live to a 16:9 format?
It would appear that it’s been some time since this thread has been active - but I have a question…
Currently, I am using an external video player on my Android tablet (Samsung Galaxy S2) BECAUSE…
The Galaxy S2 has a fairly square screen (close to 4:3 but not) - The screen ALSO isn’t true 16:9. As you can imagine, this is causing aspect ratio issues due to the fact that the Plex Android client has no controls for dealing with playback aspect ratio (I hesitate to use the word “stretch” since I would NEVER modify medias true aspect ration). So with the Plex client, I at the mercy of “quad letterbox” on many videos (old TV shows at 4:3) that I SHOULD be able to “zoom in” until there are no upper/lower black bars - only correct side-side ones.
My solution has been to use an external player (MX Player Pro which does this beautifully). Of course - when using an external player, I sacrifice some Plex functions. Primarily, Plex knowing that I’ve watched something and automatically marking it “played”.
So - The question - Hey PLEX PROGRAMMERS - Are there any plans to give us users some aspect ration / zoom control on Android (and other) clients?
Thanks…

P.S. Plex is great. Love it. But would like to see this fix.
