Many of the Live TV channels I receive are 4:3 aspect ratio with letterboxes to emulate 16:9. On my nVidia Sheild TV (plugged into a HD 16:9 TV), this results in black boxes all around the edges of the picture. On Kodi and Emby, they provide an option to “zoom” the picture, and save your last aspect ratio setting at a per channel-level.
Is this possible today, and I am unable to find it in the interface?
If not, how difficult would this be to implement in the Android TV player app?
I have the same issue. I primarily use Plex on Amazon Fire TV, but also experience it on my Roku & Android phones/tablets, too.
If anyone suggests just using the Zoom/Aspect function of my TV, that isn’t an option: 1) my TV limits my Zoom capabilites when using an HDMI source, and 2) I have some true HD channels that aren’t letterbox, and a blanket zoom to fit the letterboxed SD channels would over-zoom up the HD channels, too.
I’d love to see either a client-side auto zoom option when black bars are detected, or even an auto-black bar removal on the server side when transcoding video (like how MCEbuddy or handbrake removes black bars when converting/cutting commercials).
