Video stuttering since version 8.18 of the Apple TV app

I have tried that and the problem is that when you switch to the old player it removes the option to adjust the audio delay. Like many other users I have been experiencing Audio Sync issues on the ATV 4K 2022.

Okay I just realized that if you select Convert Automatically then the Audio Delay option stops working. - resets the delay to 0 and removes the option from the playback settings. So it really is just enabling the “old” video player.

I would like to know why Plex hasn’t addressed this yet. This is a huge problem. I shouldn’t have to use Infuse to get around this. I’m a lifetime Plex Pass subscriber and I expect better from Plex. This has been a problem for 4 versions of this app. I cannot believe that they haven’t been able to replicate it. I don’t believe that they have even tried. I would love it if someone from Plex can respond in this thread and indicate what the current status is.

I’ve also been experiencing this issue for weeks. The audio sync issue too. They both seem like major bugs to me, so surprised they still aren’t fixed. From the outside it seems like the Plex team is really stretched thin. This makes the experience using Plex unbearable. Like others, switching to Infuse and Emby for now.

Thin before they made 25% of them redundant

Just wanted to say I see same on NVidia Shield. Came to forum to see if others were seeing it. Started recently, so guess it’s related to changes that affect the ATV. Maybe!

Writing to mention I see choppy video as well on Live TV from an HDHomeRun (mpeg2 from antenna). If I go back into the guide by pressing Menu and select the channel again it plays buttery smooth.

I am new to Plex having run Channels for the last six years or so.

In my case I am running Plex 8.22 on a 1st gen Apple TV 4K (A1842) running TvOS 16.5. My video is set to 2160p UHD at 60hz, HDR10 4:2:2. The connection is gigabit and Plex reports it is using Direct Play.

After some additional research and experimentation, the stuttering issue seems to only occur with videos encoded in H.265. H.264 seems to play fine with no stuttering. I do know that decoding H.265 videos requires more processing power and may not work best with older systems. I’m running my plex server on a QNAP TS-451+ with a Celeron J1900 and 8GB of RAM. I don’t think the issue is with my system because I know I successfully played H.265 videos in the past with no stuttering issues. Hopefully someone from Plex is paying attention to this post and finds this helpful in triaging the issue.

No offense, but there’s plenty of people in this very thread confirming we have issues on all videos, including h264, so coming in and saying it’s specific to one codec just makes things more difficult to fix. You might be experiencing a different issue with your h265 videos, the stutter noted in this thread is across all videos on the Apple TV 4k Gen 3.

No offense taken. I said “it seems to” be occurring with H.265. I didn’t say it definitely is with no doubt about it. I just noticed that I tested a few videos encoded with H.264 and didn’t see any stuttering. However it could be many other factors at play. I also wanted to mention that I don’t have any issues with any video codec when using the Infuse player so it is definitely an issue with the Plex player on ATV 4K Gen 3.

I’ve done some additional testing and it seems like this is an issue related to H.265 videos. All of my H.264 videos play smooth as silk but H.265 videos stutter every 30 seconds.

Do you have the latest model Apple TV 4K? Because for me it has nothing to do with h265 or h264 it stutters on all videos regardless of codec.

This seems to be an issue with the newest Apple TV 4K and not a codec issue (at least what this thread is talking about).

I’m thrilled that h264 plays for you without issue.

I’m more thrilled that with h265 ONLY stutters every 30 seconds.

If some of us saw stutters ONLY every 30 seconds we would probably be thrilled at the improvement.

I have the most current version of the ATV. Apple TV 4K 3rd Generation 2022.

Upon additional testing It still seems like this issue is primarily occurring with H.265 videos. I haven’t had time to test all of the H.264 videos in my library but so far the ones I’ve tested don’t stutter. I’ll run additional tests and report back. Also, on the videos that do stutter it’s not just every 30 seconds. It’s very random and unpredictable. I’ve seen it happen more often then every 30 seconds.

The main question is what is Plex doing to address this issue? I haven’t seen any replies by plex representatives in this post. Does anyone know how to reach out to Plex directly? I went to their support page but couldn’t find any way to contact them.

So do I.

No it isn’t. Stop saying this or at least add “in your case”
For the rest of us it doesn’t matter if it’s h264/5, x264/5 or anything else.

There were a few replies by a Plex employee in trying to get to the bottom of this. Then Plex made him redundant. Since then nothing and mostly likely in 12 months time still nothing. It’s the norm for Plex on Apple devices.

I have the most current version of the Apple TV as well but my issue is predominantly with H.264 videos. Sometimes the issue shows up on my H.265 remuxes, but typically those are fine. It’s very strange.

Also, a weird thing I noticed to alleviate the issue temporarily is when I turn subtitles on and then immediately off, the issue ceases for the current playing video. Not sure why that would have any effect but worth noting at least in my case.

I think it’s fair to say that this issue obviously impacts all codecs. I have also noticed that if I’m experiencing stuttering, turning on subtitles mitigates the issue.

Does anyone know if there is a way to open a ticket or in some way formally report this issue to plex support?

None at all.

Plex have abandoned players in general. I only moved to the Apple TV because of how poor the Nvidia shield support had become. Thankfully Infuse are trialing a more seamless library integration with Plex. Their player is great.

Sorry that I wasn’t able to help more. I had planned on getting a 3rd Gen Apple TV 4K, and some AirPods, so I could look into this and spatial audio stuff, but I didn’t get a chance to, unfortunately.

Absolutely no need to apologise. All way beyond your control. Also as Infuse plough on with there on with their direct mode stuff I’m finding it’s UI more tolerable.

Have you found other employment or are you still looking/waiting for the right opportunity.
