Video stuttering since version 8.18 of the Apple TV app

Has there been any update on this? We’re 8+ months into this issue.

@mroy5150 @nico87

Beyond a post from a Plex Team member that mentions what needs to be fixed…

Plex + ATV 4K 2022 Dolby Atmos (DD+) not working at all - #18 by ChuckPa …then nothing at all.
But basically if you read his posts in the thread then Plex first needs to fill the open vacancy for someone who has a clue about Apple devices.
Then of course the switch to Metal API will NOT be a minor thing.
Just check back in 6 months…optimistically.

Just to clarify that the linked thread isn’t specifically regarding the stutter…but almost every issue on Apple devices is linked to needing Metal API. Including the stutter issue.

Yes, I didn’t reference the stutter in this thread, but i experience this too ^^

Thanks for that link + info. Doesn’t seem like a high priority issue for Plex. I just purchased and Infuse TV pro license to tide me over until it’s resolved.

We’re approaching a year with this issue. Can you please provide a status on where Plex is at with identifying a resolution?

I think it is pretty established that this is not a high priority on Plex side, it would require substantial resources on their end to fix this issue for rather small amount of users.

Sadly, Infuse is the ONLY solution for now.

I agree that based on their lack of response this seems to be a low priority but I wouldn’t agree that it’s due to the number of impacted users. I would suggest that the Apple TV is one of the most popular streaming devices. I’m surprised that this issue is hasn’t received higher attention. Though Infuse is a viable workaround, it’s not a great permanent workaround. The UI is very inferior to Plex. I don’t understand why a Plex representative can’t respond here and provide some kind of status on this issue. This is a Plex forum.

I shared yesterday this problem on reddit, and appleTV fanatics treat me like a troll and downvoted me. I am tired of plex app in this device.

Just out of curiosity, is everyone going through an AV receiver or does anyone have their Apple TV connected directly to the TV?

Straight into the TV for me always

It’s Reddit. More brain dead than the fanboys on here.

I’m just so disappointed, I loved Plex on my Apple TV HD, it was even working fine on older Apple TV 4K initially but then something happened and now its unusable, the sad thing is that Plex management doesn’t give this issue any priority it seems.
Even the menu stutters on Plex app, while infuse is buttery smooth in both menus as well as playback.

As a workaround, you can try opening the Plex app on your iPhone or iPad, then use AirPlay to transfer the video playback to your Apple TV. Works for me!

Why would I do that, my library is mainly 4K HDR files, by doing that I lose all the quality and advantage ?
Infuse just fixes all the playback issues for me, and $10 a year isn’t much.

I agree on both counts. Infuse works perfectly and for only $10 it’s a cheap workaround. That being said, the UI on the Plex app is much better and as a lifetime plex pass subscriber I’d prefer to use the app I already paid for. I read an article today that Plex laid off a ton of employees back in June and they are now announcing that they are opening a store to rent and buy TV Shows and Movies.

It looks like their priorities are not focused on improving their Apple TV App.

Yeah, Plex as we know it is DEAD. They are gonna change and abandon its best part: own media management. They are reading us in this forum, its own forum, and complaining during the last few years with this annoying problem. Did they try to solve it? No, they did not. Plex is dead, or at least, mortally wounded.

Hey, I tried while I was still employed by Plex

Could u tell us a little bit more? Where is the problem? Why there is no people in charge of solving this? Thanks mate

Unfortunately, I can’t help too much. The root cause had yet to be found while I still working at Plex, as for who is looking after it now, again, I’m unsure, as I haven’t worked for Plex since June 2023.

@chrisallen was the last Plex employee to actually get involved in an Apple device post as far as I’m aware.
All the right noises were made about Plex wanting to sort the multiple playback issues (this issue, audio cutting out when using AirPlay devices as the audio device…and other issues) on Apple TV.
But that was around September last year and he hasn’t posted anything at all since November.

Perhaps it’s all at a standstill until they fill the current vacancy for a Playback engineer for Apple devices?
