Videos missing from library

hello - just installed and setup a library for TV Shows. 2 shows are recognized and show up on the Fire TV app - the other 2 shows do not show up. i have setup automatic scanning - still nothing. do i need to switch the library type to “other video” in order to see all videos in the library folder? thanks!!

If they are actually TV Shows then the TV library type should be fine.
Are the show folders and episodes named correctly according to Plex standards?

they are TV shows but i don’t know the “correct” naming. if they are not named correctly they will not be in the library? in that case what do you do to show everything? i don’t care about all that thumbnail stuff - i just want it to play smoothly and my internet is not fast enough to stream directly when the neighbors are all streaming. thanks!

thanks for the tips but can anyone help me find the missing library items? they work as video files, no idea why Plex is ignoring them. thanks!

Show a screenshot of your file system, from the root of where you pointed your Plex Library at, all the way down to the actual files

screenshot attached. can you tell me how to create a new library please? i can’t find the button mentioned in step 4. thanks

just added “other videos type” folder to library and all fixed now - thanks!

Nope…

What you showed, was NOT home movies, which is what’s going to be put into Other Videos!

Your Screen Shot shows that you didn’t follow the Naming Guide, that @SE56 linked towards here:

So you need to bring the library back to shows, and follow the naming guide, in order to get metadata etc.

Sample:

The file starting with: d:\onedrive\@TV\TV Stick\Star.Trick.Discovery.S03E09.... should be:

d:\onedrive\@TV\TV Stick\Star Trick Discovery (2020)\Season 03\Star.Trick.Discovery -S03E09- ....

Read up on the naming guide, or miss out the things that makes Plex great! (Among other things that makes it stand out)

And assume here your show library was pointing towards: d:\onedrive\@TV\TV Stick

Plex is overkill for what you seem to want. All you need is a simple DLNA server to view a jumble of media files.

Plex offers a far richer experience than DLNA and there no time like the present to get sorted

I agree but the OP seems ok with what he has.

i can see you guys are really into your media! actually my goal is just a local video player using my Fire TV stick - i was using a streaming app but was not fast enough with my internet. Plex now works perfectly for that - off and running - thanks again!

It’s not that I am in to media. It’s that it’s easy to set Plex up right so why not?

I think, that some of the nerd’s up here, me included, simply wants Plex to shine, and sometimes forgets, that not everyone wants max, but are happy with basic

I agree Dane, but folders don’t turn me on or the most import the Mrs. I will just go and hide now…

i think you guys like plex to look like netflix - which is cool - but all i need is a player that works without requiring moving a memory stick from my pc to my tv up and down stairs every day! thanks again for the tips.

I like to be able to find what I’m looking for.
I have >14,000 TV Episodes, >700 Movies and >18,000 Songs.
This is a small collection compared to some.
Imagine throwing that all in one or even three folders and trying to find that episode of 30 Rock you want to see.

All we’re sayintg is, if you are just starting out, now is the time to start setting Plex up correctly, not after you collect a few hundred videos.

thanks for the tip but i would never have a collection as you describe - once i watch a show i immediately delete it or archive it. however if you have kids the situation would be different.

I’m not trying to talk you into anything.
How do you archive your shows? That’s what a collection is, an archive of old shows.
My server is for myself and a few close friends. That’s why I hang on to stuff.
My wife will watch the same show several times. She watches Cheers start to finish over and over. She sleeps through a lot of episodes. :slightly_smiling_face:
