End Goal: have the ability to SEE movies and TV shows in a Plex library view that were purchased from Apple - If selected, the metadata would be shown - have a “play” or “open in” button that would cause a reasonably clean handoff/re-direct to the AppleTV app where the content can be actually played (since we know we can’t play it in Plex and DRM removal is a huge pain, if not impossible).
Alternate goal: Since Apple seems to be pushing the TV app as a central location to view movie and tv content, including from other vendors, it should be possible to alter the Plex app(s) so that the Apple TV can recognize an “open in…Plex” option the same way it recognizes an “open in…Netflix” option.
I think there are two driving goals:
- The ability to see everything in one place, regardless of which app ends up playing the media.
- The ability to leverage the local downloaded copies of movies so that not everything has to be streamed in realtime, and if a content creator removes content from Apple/iTunes/etc., the local copy remains accessible to the owner who purchased it.
I know there is a web API for searching Apple content, and there should be SDK resources to leverage in this direction as well. It could also be possible to utilize Movies Anywhere.
This may just be a matter of thinking outside the box. There are probably solutions that I’ve not even thought of yet.
