Viewing episodes as airdates vs episode numbers?

I have a collection of talk show episodes and the one grievance I have is that when going to try to find and view an episode, I have to sort through it as though it’s a regular TV show. I’m wondering if there is a way (perhaps a plugin?) that would show the years vs season numbers (ie “2015” or “Season 2015” instead of “Season 1” or whatever) and also let me see the episodes listed as air-dates vs episode numbers. Ideally, would be nice if I could click on the year, then the month and be presented with the episodes for that time period, but having them grouped simply by year (and listed as dates vs episode numbers) is very acceptable.

Sort of frustrating to know (roughly) when something aired, but then having to figure out which “episode number” it is. File wise, it’s stored like I want it, it’s just the way Plex lists it, it’s a wasted effort. Ideas please?

You can. There are 2 ways to name your files. You can use the sXeY format which will then list them as season X, or you can name then with a date then it will show season Year and aired date instead of episode Y. Check the naming guide in my signature for more details.

You’re talking about file naming, which isn’t an issue for me (read the last sentence of the first post). I’m talking about the way Plex offers it up when browsing through the available episodes.

Plex shows it the same way you name it. If you name it standing/episode, it shows season/episode. If you name it with the aired date, it shows aired date.

It’s not doing that for me. Could you try it and make sure it’s working like that for you?

What is the exact filename you are using?

Here is one…
The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon - 2016-05-27 - Maya Rudolph, Martin Short, Leslie Odom Jr., Courtney Barnett.480p.B93A4C7B.mkv

So does the example I provided help at all?

It works for me. I made a test using the exact same name you have. Ignore the picture as that is a screen grab from the test file I used, but everything else is as expected.

Did it remain that way for you even a day later? Also, what is the exact path you used (from the ‘root’ of the media library that the test file was placed in)? It could be how I’m naming the files, or could be that you grabbed a screenshot and posted it before Plex finished with it on your end, but then you either deleted it or didn’t notice the change. For me, I moved the entire folder out of the library, set up folders with “Season” and the year number, then after emptying the ‘trash’ in Plex so it essentially removed all the episodes, I moved it back in and it will, at first, list “Season” and year, but then it resorts it into “Season 1…2…3”

The file still looks the same to me. Nothing has changed since I created the test. The files are still there, I’ve done other tests so the library has changed, but that episode hasn’t changed. Here is my filepath.

I think we have found a bug. From the looks of it, if it’s in the root folder of a show’s name, it appears to work (somewhat). If it’s in a subfolder (ex “2016” or “Season 2016”) then it converts it to a season and episode number, ignoring the date.

Here’s a couple of issues I’m noticing with it showing the date vs the unwanted s00e00 format…

  • It doesn’t show a description of the episodes, as in, who appears as guests or anything else that is usually available.
  • The folder ‘poster’ is blank unless I visit it and then navigate back. If I refresh/reload my plex site, it happens again.

Is it retrieving episode information for you? What about a poster (refresh the page and look at the ‘season’ poster, not the main poster for the show)?

Looks like something has changed. I can’t get it to show the date anymore. Looking back at what I had posted before, I think that might have been wrong. It showed Episode 14, which makes no sense. Although I’m seeing the same thing regardless if I have the files in the root folder or in a Season folder.

There is no description in TheTVDB. The title just lists the names of the guests. I’m not seeing any problems with the poster.

Okay, slight correction. Not the description, but the title of the episode, which generally contains the name of the guests. Instead, it just shows the date (which is also displayed to the right, as it does for episodes of other TV shows). So basically, showing date vs s00e00, no episode title. But with s00e00 format, it gives you the info.

Strange that it’s only giving me an issue with the poster for the season.

What do you mean by something changed? You mean it’s giving you s00e00 format now?

Yes. I now only see SxxEyy. I cannot get it to show the date anymore. I’m investigating and will provide an update when I have more info.

Possible bug then? At the very least, it needs more attention. So far it seems to be more of an after thought inclusion more than anything.

I’ve filed an issue with the devs.

Link to issue? Also, include the reference to date showing as episode title vs the data from TheTVDb?

Sorry. It’s an internal system. I’ll keep you updated and let you know if I need more info.

Oh. Well, include the title as part of the bug? :stuck_out_tongue:

I’m actually gonna start a new discussion dealing with a feature request. Perhaps you can comment in there too, to help give it some momentum.
