VPN

Is it possible to connect to a VPN when using Rasplex?  Specifically I'm wondering if OpenVPN client could be installed and configured to automatically connect, when the network connection comes up?

Apologies if this has been asked before, I did scan through the forum but couldn't see a similar question.

Thanks for your time if you're still reading at this point ;)

yes,

my pms machine is connected to a vpn and the rpi streams content with a problem.

Thanks for the reply Scott! How did you get the client installed on the RPI?

I don’t have one yet, but am considering one as a lightweight alternative to a windows computer, which currently runs Plex Home Theatre and the OpenVPN client software. Since I don’t have one I’m not sure how, or even if, additional software packages such as OpenVPN can be installed on the RPI.

Hi,

I misunderstood your question. OpenVPN runs on a MacMini that serves media and other tasks.

My RPI is mono-purpose ; it just runs RasPlex. What are you planning to do with your RPI ?

I was hoping to install the openvpn client on what I assume is a linux based OS running underneath the GUI of Rasplex.  Do you know if it is possible to install additional packages? As I don't have one myself I'm unsure if you can get to a command line prompt once Rasplex is installed on it?

The idea being I can take the RPi to a friends house, connect it to their broadband and the RPi would be configured with a script so that when the network adaptor on the RPi is connected, it automatically connects via VPN to my home network, where my Plex Media Server is.

Thanks for your reply! :)

It would be very difficult to install openvpn without a package manager if not very comfortable with Linux... OpenLEC which rasplex is based on is very stripped down and does not have a package manager.

If you were going to do this (though i think this is overkill since plex is fine being open to the internet using MyPlex) you could run the standard wheezy image, install XBMC, install the Plex plugin (or there is a debian plex home theater package now i hear) then use apt-get to install openVPN.

I do think you will run into CPU issues even at the lowest compression and bandwidth though.  I did this before myplex and loaded open-wrt on a cheap linksys box... noth says it needs to be your primary router... you can just build a static route to it for the 1 IP of your remote box.

You could also in theory do the same with any windows, linux or mac workstation nearby as a openvpn gateway.

Just as an additional note, you are literally describing exactly what MyPlex does... I see you have plexpass, just incase you misunderstood how it worked.

hi,

as swarmier has pointed out, this is one of the things myplex can do.

in my case, i have pms running on a mac mini with openvpn. my rpi stays at home, but my idevices connect all over hte world via myplex without openvpn. myplex should take care of letting the device know what the correct address is.

you could also manually type in the adress of your server or use a dynamic dns type solution.

bottom line : don't worry about openvpn on you rpi, you don't need it !   :-)

Thanks for that info, exactly what I was looking for!  :)  I'll have to order one and give some of these options a try, I guess if I don't have any joy with OpenVPN I can always use it as a local Plex client somewhere at home ;)

Thanks for the info Scott, I am aware of MyPlex, and I currently have a dynamic dns address setup for use with OpenVPN. In my case, OpenVPN was mainly setup to allow secure usage of public wifi, whilst out and about  Since I've already got a port open in my router for that, I was hoping to not open any others up if I could avoid it.  Currently I am using Plex via OpenVPN like this in Windows and Android, which works perfectly on both! :)

Thanks to you both for contributing to the thread, I've now marked it as solved, and I'm sure this info will prove useful to others reading the forum in future :)

wrong tread :)
