Wanting to build a new setup to replace my 8 year old setup

Currently I have a 2012 Synology NAS for my files and a 2012 Mac Mini that runs the media server. I have just over 9 Terabytes online right now, and am looking to build/replace this setup.

I am going to use an M1 Mac Mini to replace the 2012 Mac mini. My big question is if I can just use a couple of big hard drives plugged into the usb c ports and eliminate the added complexity of the NAS. Are the Read/write speeds high enough? Are there drives that others have used with success?

I’ve also got a 2012 Mac Mini that I use this box with:

SoftRAID software for Mac let’s this box filled with 8TB drives appear as one drive on the Mac. Has worked great.

Thank you. That is an interesting thought for a solution, and I am looking at it, though likely with a smaller bay (methinks your collection is larger than mine). Love the throughput and looks like softraid is trying to stay ahead of the curve with the new m1.

Yea, I had 8 separate external USB drives hooked up and just the cable mess was a nightmare. This has neatened things up a lot.
