Hey everyone
I’m new in the hole Plex thing…
I have a huge movie collection- mainly DVDs from back in the days.
Right now I’m converting them all to MKV to make sure no quality is lost.
I really don’t use Plex for much else at the moment, but the other day I saw the tap “Discover [Beta]”.
In that page, I found a completely random movie “The Truman Show” and clicking that, I’m able to see that it’s one of the movies I have in my own collection, but also available on a few streaming services that I have.
So I thought - why can’t the option for “Watch from these locations” not be visible on all the movies I have in my own library and not just in the “Discover” tap??
This way, if I find a great movie in my own collection, but in a less than ideal quality (since it’s dvd) and that same movie is available on one of my streaming services in higher quality, I could go watch it from there??
So two questions:
1: does any of the above even make sense?
2: is it or do we know if it will be possible?
I’m looking so much forward to hear back from you guys
Determining the availability takes considerable time. Having this query automatically done as you browse your personal library will hurt responsiveness of the user interface.
The availability query would practically “broadcast” the contents of your personal library over time.
And not only to plex.tv, but also to each Plex server that you’ve been granted access.
Must be due to my limited knowledge, but I’m failing to see how this is much different than how other metadata is added to a movie in my library?
When I add one of my DVDs I get info on IMDb ratings, cast and plot of the movie - sure there must be a way to add information on availability of a movie on a variety of streaming services?"
Downloading is once, then nothing for months or even years. And only to plex.tv.
If were to happen at every access, it’d happen much, much more frequently. And the requests would not only go to plex.tv as explained above.
Availability on streaming services is a “moving target”. It must be fetched at least weekly to be usable.
Items are added and vanish from online streaming services all the time.
It’d be a Sisyphos task to store availability locally on your server, since these data will become stale rather quickly.
Guess I kindda understand - though, i’d love to see this happen anyway.
Maybe a collaboration with someone like PlayPilot, JustWatch or Reelgood to kinda link to their service in the Plex web interface. That way no data is stores on my server, and no data needs updated on plex side. Result on avalibility for streaming would show kinda like an embedded searchresult form one of the listed sites.
Ok, so I’v been fiddling around with the Plex Web interface - And now I’m really confused.
If I add one of my own movies to the “Watchlist”, I can then go to the “Discovery” tab and find that movie under “Available on your services” - This makes sense, since the movie is in my library.
What does not make sense is the fact that according to above answers I can’t have this view as my default on all movies – even though I could in theory add all my movies to the “Watchlist” can find them through the “Discovery” list?
I’m so confused of this missing ability, which I my head would make a great product even better!
I really do hope that this feature will be added in the future – Sure there must be some smart guys working for Plex that can get it running without compromising users content nor hurt the performance of Plex.
