Watch together going away in app

Very disappointed with the decision to end watch together. This was the only way I was able to watch with my dad who lived in the UK and only had a TV. It’s a memory I hold dear since his passing last year.

It was also the only way for me to watch with family in other parts of the world. Asking them to navigate the web browser is too clunky.

Even though this feature didn’t require Plex pass, if you paid for Plex pass to support the company, ask for a refund and explain why. If enough people bombard them, I’m sure their Dev team will hear about it: https://www.plex.tv/contact/

Additionally:

  • Use the vote button on this page to have it added to the “Plex Experience”
  • Email the CEO at keith@plex.tv

@PlexInfo, it would really be nice if you could chime in since the original forum is closed.

Same, this has been a critical feature for me and several friends who have kept me sane and healthy in this increasingly terrifying world. It didn’t always work the best, but it worked more than good enough. I’m very disappointed this feature wasn’t prioritized in this new experience you’re working on.

What kind of absolutely insane decision is this?
I use this multiple times a day, every day.
Super pissed, been using plex for years with multiple accounts on plex pass, but maybe I’ll need to finally investigate alternatives…

I’ve used Plex for years and am using this feature all the time to watch things with friends in other countries and my long distance partner! This feature is so important! Please don’t drop watch together!

There’s always Jellyfin with the syncplay feature. I’ve resisted going to Jellyfin for so long because I’ve been using plex for a decade and been a lifetime member almost as long…

Agreed, i’m a LDR and this gives us the ability to do something together, massively disappointed in this change and makes me wonder if plex is worth sticking with. i don’t care about 90% of the ‘new’ features they’re pushing, this is the only change that has made me care… and not in a good way

Since they are keeping support (for now) in the WebUI, that means the server binaries should still support it for older clients.
Looks like its time to block the Plex app from updating so we can’t get these new “features”.

Plex HTPC feedback - Plex Players / Desktop Players - Plex Forum

There are some instructions in here for the desktop clients, not sure how this would be done on a smart TV though…

Also be sure to grab a copy of the downloads currently available, as Plex will likely remove them when this new update pushes out.

It’s not a permanent solution, but it should be enough to buy some time while we all look for alternative platforms.

It’s crazy for plex to be removing this feature, it is the entire reason I bought plex pass and half the reason I use Plex in the first place. If they are removing the feature then I want to be able to opt out of updating anything; whatever this ‘new experience’ is in don’t want any part of it if its just going to remove features I actively use.

I wonder if Plex is removing this because they think having more than one person watch the same content at the same time from a server might be considered going against licensing agreements?

So incredibly disappointing by the Plex team, I use this feature on a weekly basis with my friend. Was the feature perfect? no, it was buggy at times but why not improve it instead?. It is such an amazing feature that deserved more love than it ever got. Is the new Plex experience supposed to take away features users like? if so I don’t want it. Please do not remove Watch Together.

Just noticed they’ve put the announcement as an update on a 5 year old blog post rather than it’s own post, feels like an attempt to sneak it in with less notice and prevent public outcry more than anything else

I think they would have avoided emailing everyone about the change if that was the case.

This is unacceptable, one of the main reason I use plex is watch together.
don’t remove it.

Sounds plausible, but honestly that’s just another reason to find an alternative platform. They have no right to police my usage, and no way to know how many “licenses” I may or may not have for the content.

If this is the case, what’s next?

i dare say a good chunk of people will miss the email as it went straight into junk for me, also means it won’t get scraped as ‘news’ on the blog this way

They did email people but linked to that article where comments are off

This is insanely dumb, it’s truly a unique feature for Plex

I really hope that Plex consider changing this. Extremely dumb decision. I use this all the time with family and friends. Even more disappointing considering I just got my lifetime Plex Pass!

Absolutely braindead decision
