Watch together going away in app

I am so disappointed in the decision to remove the watch together feature.
It has been a great added feature for having interaction with my 82 year old mother 1200 miles away.
If in the future Plex comes with a paid version of the watch together feature, I will stop using their products all together.
Bastiges!

Watch Together is essential to me and my user base, and clearly to the MAJORITY of the Plex community.

Plex really needs to KEEP the Watch Together feature and ensure that it is available in whatever new beta or apps that NOBODY had requested for…

WE NEED WATCH TOGETHER, PLEX!!!

It’s utterly disappointing how the Plex management egregiously ignores the legitimate concerns and desires of the true Plex community, including many of us loyal fans who are on Plex Pass!

Plex needs to stop being a smart Alec by “innovating” new features and that we clearly don’t need and drowning us with many unimpressive side features with poor utility and uptake!

I implore Plex to stay true to their initial core values of developing the PMS in the first place.

Please Plex, please make sure to keep Watch Together and prioritise its implementation in any future versions of your apps.

This is a very sad time for the Plex community. Time to mourn…

I don’t understand why this feature is being removed, this feature is a very well received feature that nearly everyone enjoys. This is a huge regression.

bad move.

Extremely displeased with this. I primarily watch on Xbox, and after a night of gaming with friends, the party ends our night with some watch-together sessions. I’d buy a 2nd lifetime pass if it meant support would stay around. Please, Plex, don’t make us resort to using the Xbox edge browser  thank you

Things that are difficult yet accomplished:

  • Reaching low earth orbit
  • Landing on the moon
  • Flying on mars
  • Building the SR-71 using slide rulers

Things that are difficult that can’t be solved:

  • World hunger
  • Talking politics at the dinner table
  • World peace
  • What came first, the chicken or the egg
  • Glass half full, or glass half empty

Apparently we can add keeping ‘watch together’ in the new code path or fancy app to the difficult and can’t be solved list.

This is a huge disappointment, I will begin my transition away from this platform so that I have everything ready when this feature is gone. Good riddance.

As a Plex Pass subscriber, Watch Together is an essential and unique feature that greatly enhances the value of Plex. Removing it would significantly degrade my experience and reduce the reason to maintain my subscription. Please reconsider this poorly-thought-out decision.

Here to echo what’s being said. I’m very disappointed as watch together is a key feature I use Plex for.

I think it’s important to play devil’s advocate here, they say in the announcement that they rewrote the apps from the ground up, which means they had to remake the entire Plex app and everything from scratch and when they saw Watch Together they saw a, in my eyes, incomplete and janky experience and didn’t want to bring it over to the new app. What I think is going to happen, is that they’re going to work on a way better Watch Together experience, that could work with shows as well and maybe have some kind of party system like there is on Syncplay. From the point of view of a developer I can see why they wouldn’t want to spend extra time on a feature they know will get replaced anyways.

Still they could have worded it better or make the new app/ui/experience opt-in for people who really need/want Watch Together or even wait until they made their better Watch Together. I hope that this is their plan, as they do say “we don’t preclude the possibility of offering similar functionality again in the future, using new tooling”.

Yeah, probably going to look for alternatives. All these changes have been ripping the heart and soul out of the Plex Experience that I loved.

Watch Together allowed my spouse and I to have “date nights” during their year long deployment.

I am a developer, I get it. Not all features can been carried forward. However, this is a well-loved feature and I would love to know what made the cut instead.

+1 another strong user of watch together and to get rid of it shows Plex team are losing the understanding of how and why we as users consume on Plex.

syncplay is the same feature for all intent and purpose. It’s also jankier then Watch Together. I don’t see it has poorly worded out given their replies to the customer complaints about this issue. I am not putting alot of hope in it returning with how they don,t seem to care about their customers.

same here. lifetime user for 10 years, but it’s clear that Plex is heading the wrong way…

time to rethink and finally test the alternatives.

and I would definitely not post something like "please don’t … " – if they don’t understand that this is a very wrong move, then the writing is on the wall

This is most likely a cash grab by Plex. For those of us that have paid for lifetime subs there is no money for Plex anymore. Remove a feature and add it later and then sell it as a new additional features not part of the original sub and now they can force us into a subscription model for new features. All companies are doing this and Plex will do it to us. Eventually your lifetime sub will be worthless.

This annoying. I’m about to start a job in May that will have me out of town 3 nights a week. The wife and I were planning on using this feature to watch our shows together. But it seems that may not be possible once they remove it. Not happy about that.

Well guess there goes the last reason my family was using Plex. App polish aside (having not really played with the new Plex exp) with family spread across states this was a great feature.

TBH I’m sure that telemetry says it’s a low usage feature (vs the total user space) but a great one never the less.

Hello Matt,

We definitely know that Watch Together is an important and loved feature for a lot of people. The decision we made in our recent announcement was not an easy one to make, but it unfortunately isn’t practical for us to try and bring that existing functionality into the new app experience we’re in the midst of creating. As noted in the announcement, though, this doesn’t preclude us from coming back into this area of functionality in the future. That’s certainly something we might do.

For now, though, Watch Together will continue to be available in our current apps, including our web app. The change is currently only related to the future releases of our new apps with the new experience.

Watch Together is a free feature and is not related to Plex Pass subscriptions. Generally speaking, Plex Pass transactions are nonrefundable, per our “Subscriptions” terms (https://www.plex.tv/about/privacy-legal/subscriptions-and-rentals/), to which you agreed. In cases where a Plex Pass subscription was purchased very recently (e.g. within the last couple of days), we can often make a special exception to cancel and refund a purchase. Looking at your legionx1985@gmail.com Plex account, I see that the subscription was started more than four and a half ago, however. We’re unable to offer a refund in such cases, I’m afraid.

If you would like to discuss things, you’re welcome to visit our friendly forums at https://forums.plex.tv/ and join the discussion, if you haven’t done so already.

Have a great week!

+1, family uses the watch together feature daily between states and countries! Would rather live with the existing issues than “upgrade” to a more efficient experience without the functionality we’ve come to rely upon in staying connected. It’s quite unclear from the announcement whether the functionality will just suddenly stop in the near future, or if by not upgrading the server software it can still be used.

If Plex, as a company, requires funding to continue development, then they should just come out and ask. Should the proposed features be in line with what their consumers want, then they will get the needed funding and support to do so. I’ve seen a number of posts regarding specific features that people are willing to offer financial support for, in excess of the Plex Pass cost. On the other hand, if the planned development only reflects an internal vision of never-ending expectations for increased profitability/margins and for undesired “social experiences,” the user-base has been quite clear: No Thank You!

Legit bought this for me and my wife she had blended work she’s away for a month and home for a month. This was a wonderful feature for us even something as simple as planning a date night. We usually put on a movie I’ll order her food she orders mine and watch together with video call. Can’t believe this is going away and I’ll be moving to jelly fin it’s free after all
