Hello folks…
Is there any way I can do such thing?
To be able to create a guest user under Plex Home and that guest user able to access local Plex server without a hassle of passing through authorisation using plex account? Basically saying I want anonymous user able to freely access my Plex web app to scroll and watch server content, but not having access to server settings etc and not having to have Plex account for signing in… It seems such a trivial thing but for some reason it sank in complications.
What do we have now.
- If I don’t use Plex Home, then access to the web app can be either restricted completely or not restricted at all… there is no such thing like simple limited guest user access. Why?
- If I use Plex Home. I can not access web app without proper plex account even if I want to give limited access to to an anonymous guest without asking them to go and sing up for proper Plex account to sign in first then choose the user for the local server…
So is there any way to let Plex Home guest user to access local Plex server without any authorisation or to limit access to the local Plex server for other anonymous guest users that are not server owner when such server isn’t under Plex Home thing?
Thanks.
Uhm… Open your web browser, and go to the Plex Web App. In it go to Settings > Users > Home and Enable Guest should be in the upper right corner. (You need to enable Plex Home for this to work.) Set up the libraries on the user after you enabled it, and you should be good to go after this…
I just tried this with Edge, and I had to log in as myself with fast user switching, then switch out to the guest account… Afterwards the libraries I had set up for the guest account were there. The only settings they have access to are the settings for that web browser’s player as these settings are unique to the device. (And not global) The guest can SEE the other Home Users, but can’t edit them… The guest can see devices and can remove devices not Pinned in. (example, the guest account can’t see the Vizio Smart TV and delete it, but can see other web browsers that have been logged on with.)
Closed the browser window, and pulled it up new, and had to click on a user to proceed. Guest goes straight in right away…
Simple and easy…
Now try to access your web app from another computer. First you see before you allowed to use guest is authorisation request with Plex user account. I don’t want to force my server users to go and register their account with Plex when they open my server for the first time… I want to give them that guest access button straight away… also the network they access my server from has no internet connection. I can “drill a hole” in my firewall so server could talk to outside, but not network users… Yes… that’s a bit specific case…
I have Plex Pass. When I create Home… any user that want to access it as a Guest should authorise themselves with their Plex account anyway first time they try to open web app. That’s bullshit way. Too many efforts for an anonymous guest access. If I turn Home off. Then no guest user and my server one naked vulnerable thing with legs wide open. I guest Plex developers make in such way to force people to use Plex Pass… which is good value to be fair, but for the rest… to hook them on Plex account anyway… damn strategists…
