Hi guys,
I have Plex Media Server running on my desktop pc. I want a 6tb drive for mass media storage and will be getting a 6tb WD Green/Red drive asap.
Which one is more suitable for my needs? I know Reds are for NAS, but what benefits do they have over greens in my situation?
Here’s a great article about that very question, albeit a little bit dated (late 2014)
Personally on the basis of a single drive in your desktop, WD Green. Your not using RAID and wouldn’t really take advantage of any of the WD Red NAS grade features, aside from the extra cost for the longer life span they are rated for.
With WD Green you’ll also benefit from lower noise operation and eco friendly power usage, something which will be good for a desktop.
Ultimately you can read the article and make an informed decision based on the information. The one thing I would say is think long term. For example would you expand your storage with multiple drives and use RAID in the future? If so, that changes things. There are newer WD Green drives that are designed for RAID use as they implement TLER and various functions seen on WD Red, but its all relative to your storage plans.
Thanks for you answer.
I want precise that my destokt will be use 24/7.
So maybe it’s an important thing in order to determine if I should chose green or red
For 24/7 running then maybe the WD Red would be better, if only to benefit from the continuous operation ratings of WD Red drives. In reality the cost isn’t all that much more than a WD Green, so if you can afford the little bit extra why not. Be aware that WD Red drives can be a little bit louder during operation and consume more power, but its fairly small difference. In fact over the years both drives have become very similar these days.
Go Red, they are suited for 24/7. I have asked this question here: https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/174298/what-hdd-do-you-have-in-your-storage-server-nas/p1
Red. For the 24/7 and better warranty,
Ok thanks ! Let’s go for Red
Late to the party, but I agree: go Red for any drive running constantly. Also worth it just for the better warranty.
WD 3TB Reds on sale today only (Shell Shocker) at NewEgg… $99.99
Just sayin’
Red all the way
I have 2- 6 TB reds mirrored, they work great.
I had a green, I noticed some performance issues with multiple streams at the same time…now I don’t
Red Pro or Black both have 5 yr warranty vs only 2 or 3.

I would argue if you still have unused space after year 3, you wasted too much money initially on unused spinning and depreciating drive space losing warranty over the years.

That’s an interesting perspective. My last couple drives have taken me a while to populate with files. ![]()
