Tone deaf response. The point is not that there is a check box somewhere each account can manage but that it’s all enabled, even stuff I swear was off plus new features that I never consented to and are also enabled by default. This is a massive breach of trust.
So it could have happened? Who is getting fired today to settle this and stop development in this direction?
Since when is this a feature and how to I opt out (which should be default ) and purge all data from Plex?
You can’t.
How do I disable/block the friend component and restore a list of users I share content with individually and without overlap (who are friends and real people that I know, otherwise why would I have The Big Bank theory)? These people do not know each other or need to see anything about the other.
How do we delete past watch and rating history after disabling this feature?
More proof Plex is just a data mining company at this point. This is why they won’t fix other issues, to concentrated on building shady systems/practises like this.
I had to unsubscribe from things I had already unsubscribed from.
Time to scrub my Ubuntu server and restart with something else.
I do have useful features, that have existed through many updates, just totally broken for my users. Download is enabled but no one the library is shared with can do so.
Plex changed Sync (server owner has to have a Plex Pass, people downloading don’t need one) to Downloads (server owner doesn’t need a Plex Pass, people dowloading do need a Plex Pass). That’s probably why none of your sharees can download from you.
This link is available under the Account settings on Plex for Windows but not Plex Web on one of my computers
https://www.plex.tv/vendors-us/
I don’t see it on my other computer using same account on Plex for Windows or Plex Web
I don’t know what the reason for this is, but it sure doesn’t look good
I did not opt in to share my data, I did not opt in to convert all shared users to “friends”
I did not choose to make my children “friends” so they can see my watch history…duh…
There’s a Plex setting I will be using that will absolutely keep this from happening again.
Settings/uninstall
Download Emby and/or Jellyfin
Install.
Absolutely incredible… Of all the dumb ■■■■ Plex could do. This takes the cake.
" I wonder how many people just had their week’s porn selections emailed to their Plex friends."
@OttoKerner , since you seem to be active in this thread, and this tongue in cheek comment raises a valid question. Does Plex have safe guards around what content is sent in these emails? I personally don’t have a problem with the emails, but I could definitely see some hot water situations if this is strictly driven by ANYTHING being watch, or in fact is is based on popular stuff across the world and aggregated with your friends and if they have seen it? Some intel on this might be beneficial to some.
Oh great, another “enhancement” that users haven’t asked for, all while ignoring the 9 year old request for multiple artists existing on the same song.
Is this another MVP to get a milestone payment from investors right before the holidays? Are we attempting to turn plex into a social network lol? I’m ecstatic all of my email preferences “magically” turned back on and I had to unsubscribe yet again.
At least we aren’t showing extreme adult content to children like when the MVP of Discover rolled out last year.
Whether it’s pr0n or just silly stuff, I do not want my friends and family to know that I watched it. It’s a non-feature that simply never should exist.
If I want them to know, I will talk to them about it.
Plex needs to remove this and quick, before losing all faith in them.
Was that click-through-setup ever updated to have the “Who can find your account?” be included? When I went through it before, it was missing, and the setting could only be found here: https://app.plex.tv/desktop/#!/profile/edit. It also defaulted to “Anyone” at that time.
I had no idea that Plex users you share your libraries with are converted to “Friends” that you now need to unfriend to avoid these situations!
I really like what Plex as a software allows me to do, but I really hate the decisions Plex as company is making for it… We are hosting the servers, we should control what data it collects & shares or not. This is yet another step closer to time when I will need to migrate away to different software. Very sad.
I’ve just gotten the email Your week in review is ready with info about what some of my family members are watching. This is unacceptable. I didn’t ask for this.
Really, there’s no way to justify this.
There is a link at the bottom where I can manage this email notifications but how can I manage the email notifications that go to my family members with info about what I am watching?
Who on Earth thought this would be a good idea? I mean, don’t get me wrong but there are many current open issues with clients, server, etc. that need to be fixed and allocating developer time to this nonsense seems to me like a really dumb decision.
Please, Plex, remove this already.
You have to know Log into app.Plex.tv and know that you’ve been signed up to share your activity to so called friends.
You’d think, after all the times in the past when Plex sprung a new, privacy-piercing feature on us, and got totally reamed in the forums for enabling it on everyone’s account without informed consent, they might have learned.
But no, it’s as if they don’t give a tinker’s dam for user privacy, and are incapable of learning that people don’t want crap like this automatically turned on for them before they even know it exists.
