Player Version#:N/A
Hard to describe, harder to search/Google. So I will try to provide a few screen shots to help.
First to cover the basics (because I am a long time lurker I see a lot of common occurrences):
This has only been a problem for Movies not TV shows or Music
The way I name my files is, first the file name has no spaces in it and includes the whole title, year, and encoding technique. The folder is name EXACTLY like the title name in the IMDB web page. Using this method has resulted in few issues since back when I used XMBC, then Later Kodi and now Plex
I have not been having this issue with EVERY movie, just once in a while and it has been going on for a bit now (want to say 2-3 months) but it is rare.
No amount of searching again fixes the issue with that movie. I end up having to edit everything myself.
So no the issue.
After I add a new file, Plex names the movie the file name. instead of the movie name.
file name: The.Peanuts.Movie.2015.1080p.BluRay.H264.AC3.mp4
Move name: The.Peanuts.Movie.2015.1080p.BluRay.H264.AC3.mp4
Screen Shot
So, first course of action is to ‘Fix the Match’
So I do, and with a few seconds a good match is found
After Clicking on it and waiting for Plex to finish updating metadata, the image flips around …
…and
…
nothing changed.
Checking the fields reveals that it got a lot of it but did not edit (or change?) all of them, see the screen shots below:
General Options: (other than the name and sort by, it is fine)
Do you have the “Local Media Assets (Movies)” near the top or at the top of the list in the Agents area? If it is at the top, it will pull whatever information is embedded in the video file first, before going out for the rest of the info. Try moving it to the bottom for both Plex Movie and The Movie Database if it is not already…
In addition to moving Local Media Assets to the bottom of the list, consider using Plex’s recommended naming convention.
The recommended way to name movies for Plex is Movie (year).ext. Adding the extra information to the file name increases the likelihood of a mismatch or no match. If you wish to keep it, put the info in square brackets, as Plex ignores such info: Movie (year) [other stuff].ext.
Instead of The.Peanuts.Movie.2015.1080p.BluRay.H264.AC3.mp4
Use: The Peanuts Movie (2015) [1080p.BluRay.H264.AC3].mp4
See this post for details on how Plex matches movies and how the extra information can mess up the process.
Plex recommended media naming and organization guidelines: Your Media.
In my best Tony Montana voice, “Say hello to my little friend!” Meet FileBot. It has pre-defined templates for Plex. Many people use it to help with naming/re-naming movies and TV shows.
Actually, if they match OK then consider leaving them alone. Correct as needed, or do a few at a time. You can always use FileBot if you run into recognition/naming difficulties.
