What causes a transcode to be throttled and quality dropped? Bandwidth?

Or hardware? I see two streams that are running now and even though I have the quality to be set at 1080p it’s transcoding down to 720p

It could be bandwidth. What is you current set up like? Is this a remote connection? Or on the same network?

A throttled transcode means the PMS CPU is ahead of things, not that it is slowing things down.

As to why things are transcoding, you’ll need to send additional information. To start:

  • PMS server - version & platform (windows, linux, etc)
  • PMS client - version & platforms (web, roku, etc)
  • If Roku/FireTV/etc, is device connected to TV, receiver, etc? Include make/model for TV, receiver, etc.
  • Local or remote streaming
  • If remote, uplink speed at PMS location & downlink speed at each remote location.
  • MediaInfo text format analysis of problematic movie/tv show/etc.

FYI, if using Plex Web on Windows or Mac, or Plex app in Windows store, suggest using Plex Media Player instead. It is a much more capable client, capable of direct playing many formats that transcode when using Plex Web or the Windows Store app.

Thanks guys. After checking, it seems like the default setting on Roku is 720 and that’s why it was being transcoded to that
