I'm perpetually looking for the perfect device to watch Plex on my TV screen and I came across 'Slice' on Kickstarter.
This media player is build around a Raspberry Pi and will come with HDD & a special build of XBMC.
The creators says that you can install any Pi Linux build on the device if you wish, so maybe this could turn to be a great Rasplex player.
What do you think guys?
Why pay 4x the price of a Pi, a hard drive would be redundant as Rasplex wouldn't use it, all media is on the server, that's how Plex works, the extra USB ports aren't needed (the B+ has four anyway), would you really want the gimmicky flashing lights when watching a movie? Inbuilt IR, you can add that to a standard Pi for a very small amount of money, but most people use CEC and their TV remote anyway. Etc, etc, etc......
This is really for people who want XBMC not Plex, (as they are supplying basic OpenELEC for Raspberry Pi with a custom skin), and need to store media files locally.
But to answer the question, yes in theory once any additional drivers are built into OpenELEC (which Rasplex is built on, with Plex HT running on top of that).
I'm a little bit more excited because it's more then just a Raspberry PI. It has better Audio support then the original Raspberry PI, it has a default remote, a case and now the option to have Ambilight included. For people who love plex, it's better to have the diskless version... It's a little bit more expensive then a raspberry pi, but if you calculate the remote, the case, the included cables, ...
I think it can be a good plug-and-play device for some people!
I am a newbie to plex, having spent the last few weeks trying out Raspbmc and OpenElec on my Raspberry, using NFS to access videos on my file server. My experience was not good: I had multiple overscan issues with both Raspbmc, XBMC on Raspbian, and Open_elec. I also had stability problems, with the XBMC client losing sync during HDMI input switches (I also have a Tivo in my config). XBMC would sometimes only start in 480 mode, not acceptable at all.
I followed the recommendation of a family member and installed the Plex Server on a new file server. While installing that, I decided to look around for plex clients that were compatible with the Raspberry PI, and found RasPlex. I had it downloaded in a few minutes and installed it in the PI and, it played beautifully. I really like the plex display, it makes selecting a movie much more interesting.
This is just a note to thank the developers of Rasplex, it is a very good effort.
