Is the functionality for offline/downloadable media a possibility for the Raspberry Pi? Here is my situation: since the Raspberry Pi 2 can be powered off of a standard 5v ~1.5-2A Usb and has a Composite output, it can easily be hooked up in a car with a portable screen, but I wouldn’t have access to my main server… Is there any possibility for this functionality to be added to Rasplex?
A year ago there was a post by @dlanor that will probably help you!
That old post of mine referred to by the previous post does describe how to make RasPlex able to play files from a local drive, but the method of doing so is not very convenient as you have to browse to each media file using a simple file browser interface, without any of the poster lists or other eye-candy we’re accustomed to with normal use of Plex clients. This usage is not intended as replacement for a PMS server, but simply as a complement to allow playback of files not yet added to the PMS library.
When using an RPi for purely local playback of media without using any PMS server, RasPlex is not the correct tool for that task. For such cases it would be more efficient to install an OpenELEC system using Kodi (renamed XBMC) on that RPi, since this allows you to scan media from a local drive and build a media library with poster support, similar to that of Plex but independent of any server (both a strength and a weakness). Such a library is best prepared before moving the equipment to the car, so that Kodi can scan Internet sites for media metadata, so as to provide the best user experience.
