For some background, I am an avid Plex user who happens to also be a music junkie. All my music is 1411 kbps and in WAV containers because I’m a fan of lossless audio. My audio streaming setting on mobile is set to Original quality and my audio sync quality on mobile is also set to Original.
However, I use iOS, which I know does not support the WAV format, so I was wondering what format my music is being converted to before syncing and streaming to my iPhone? Is it really converting at original quality (1411 kbps) to a lossless format like FLAC or Apple Lossless that is supported by my iPhone or is it converting to a lossy file format?
I’d be grateful to anyone who can tell me the file format that my media is being converted to and confirm that it is indeed remaining 1411 kbps. Thanks in advance!
You can see this on your Plex server’s Dashboard, where it’ll tell you what codec it’s being converted to. I believe if you’re on a newer version it should be getting transcoded to opus, which is transparent at 128kbps and up.
I tested a stream to my PC and to my iPhone and it shows a direct stream to my PC, but doesn’t specify what codec the music is being converted to for my iPhone. Is this where it should be? This is all being done with a fresh install test server.
I am on the newest version for my testing, so it’s good to know that it’s the opus codec. Does that mean that all my music is being downloaded at 128kbps, even if I select Original for my sync quality? I will probably go lower from now on anyway now that I know it’s the opus codec, but I’m curious to know. Thanks!
