No logs, because I can’t access the server right now. An Ubuntu update seems to have broken Ubuntu, and the simplest repair with my limited skill level seems to be reinstalling Ubuntu – it warns me it will delete all my files, photos, etc. if I do that.
Will it also delete my Plex server database, etc.? There’s a lot of personalization in there I’d hate to lose, and past attempts to restore Plex databases from backups have been disasters.
And this suggests that you are not proficient in Ubuntu?
I don’t mean any offence but I still marvel at just how many people seem so determined to run an OS that they are not proficient in.
Somewhere in there is your whole PMS folder with all your customisations and metadata that I’m sure could be retrieved and backed up before reinstalling.
I see… So you’re saying that if a person isn’t a tech junkie and proficient in an operating system, then they shouldn’t be able to use Plex.
Unfortunately, I have to agree with this.
My machine is too old to run Win 10 and besides I dont have a legal license for any Windows OS so I had to use Ubuntu as well. I am not proficient in Ubuntu and since the last update a couple weeks ago the only thing Plex will do consistently, is disappoint me and forget where my libraries are.
Plex is by no means an end user software. It is more akin to an enterprise software that demands certain expertise and exorbitant amounts of time to scour the web and Plex forum to not find solutions. There is no support and there is no effort made by the company to fix common issues or to make the program a little smarter and enable the end user to maybe fix things that break every now and then.
Microsoft Access is easier to use than Plex! Plex is just downright stupid. Hey Plex, what’s that over there! Huh! Where? I dont see anything… Oops, too late Plex just forgot where its libraries were and now you have to rebuild everything. If you shout at Plex it gets nervous and spills its library information on the floor.
I am so sick of this piece of sh*t program. I cant believe I bought the lifetime pass. WTF was I thinking!
Sorry that’s not what I intended to Imply.
I only to suggest that if you are more familiar with a particular OS then that is the one you should use.
Your hardwares capabilties is hardly a Plex issue. Nor was the chioce up upgrade your Ubuntu install.
I’m by far from a techie but know my way around Windows more or less.
Linux far less so. So personally I run Plex at home on Windows and anything else would be a totally pointless exercise. For me Plex is extremely easy to use on Windows. I dare say for anyone proficient in any Linux distro they would say the same about that distro.
If youre having specific issues you are far better stating them than ranting. You recieved detailed steps to help you try to recover (In your only other thread) with no input from you since?
Either please do not suggest I’m saying something that I clearly haven’t said.
I’m the original poster, and my question was answered; I moved on to a more detailed question about backing up and restoring Plex after an Ubuntu reinstall (Ubuntu needs to be reinstalled, and I'm terrified) which was very capably answered by you, Chuck. I’m not sure who the “knicks” user is but I’m satisfied with the question and answer in this thread.
