What is 'Plex Media Scanner Deep Analysis' and how do I disable it?

Where can I find info on this? Googling just finds results of people having issues with the high CPU and disk usage, but no clear info.

Is it required for Plex to index the media? Can it be disabled so that Plex only scans media on-demand when the item is requested?

Is it a one-time scan? Or does it run periodically?

EDIT: I found a partial explanation: Excessive I/O while sheduled tasks are running - #24 by ChuckPa

Settings - Server - Scheduled Tasks - Perform extensive media analysis during maintenance.

This is known as “Deep Analysis”.

Which lead me to: https://support.plex.tv/articles/201553286-scheduled-tasks/

Perform extensive media analysis during maintenance

This does an extensive bitrate analysis on each file in your library to help with bandwidth controls

So it’s not required nor is it a one-time scan. It seems like this shouldn’t be on by default, considering the high resource usage it requires, and not a clear benefit.
