It seems like an a giant rabbit hole to go down when I search and research this question. What is the best option or are the best options for clients, apps, streaming devices that can direct play the most codecs and file types? I have built my library with larger file sizes. They don’t seem to play well on my Amazon Fire, though it its a year or so old. My parents have two Samsung TV’s at their house that I have tested. One streams and direct plays perfectly. One barely runs Plex at all. I don’t understand the difference.
Can any of the streaming devices like Apple TV, Roku, FireTV, or Shield direct play most file types as is?
I know that some Samsung TV’s seem to direct play most files, but then some do not. Is there a way to determine which Samsung TV’s will run the Plex app smoothly and direct play my files?
I just want some solutions if there are some regarding which front-end clients/apps/players support the largest variety of codecs and require the least amount of transcoding.
That’s a great and informative video. Unfortunately it doesn’t touch on whether these files are direct playing or transcoding.
I am pretty sure it is mentioned that the Shield has the best Direct Play support.
Even better than that you can only achieve by using Kodi or PMP on fully blown PC hardware.

No, actually the other way around.
But the Shield provides access to other entertainment options, which a pure Plexc client cannot do. So it is a serious contender nonetheless.
My main use is remote from overseas. I have my server in the US and live part of the year overseas I have a great connection on both ends typically. Things tend to play well on my laptop, so I can wire in to my tv via hdmi from there. But I’d like something for my home abroad that is more convenient than plugging in the computer. From what I’m gathering, Shield may be best as far as tv boxes or tv apps go with direct playing?
