What is the best streaming device?

I have a Roku Ultra, and a previous-gen Apple TV (4? not sure). When I run Plex from my computer’s web browser in Chrome, things are FASTT (with two T’s!). I can click ahead 5 min and it loads instantly. I can go back 30 sec, same story. With the Roku, even with settings apparently correct (no transcoding - I checked), it’s super laggy. 5-10 seconds just to skip ahead/behind. The Apple TV is faster, but I honestly hate the remote so bad I just about refuse to use it.
Similarly, streaming DVR is fast on my laptop., but terrible experience on Roku (even with the preview app) and less terrible (but still bad) on Apple TV.

I’ll mention, my server is a Mac Mini circa 2014ish. Not the best, not the worst, but since everything runs like butter streaming to my laptop, I gotta think the server isn’t the problem.

So… if money isn’t an option, what player should I use? Any thoughts? Thanks!

Shield. 2019.

Well if you think that remote is bad then stay away from the earlier Shield. But Nvidia have got their act together on the 2019 Shield, so I concur with 5stringdeath.
Though I never really had an issue with the ATV4K remote the new Shield remote is just stunning.
It’s touch sensitive backlighting made me abandon my Harmony touch.

Thanks for the tip. I’ll look into it.
Does it do DVR stuff pretty well?

I have several TV devices I have tested against. The Shield ALWAYS stands out. You can’t go wrong with a nVidia Shield.

The DVR is dependent on your server, and the mood of Plex DVR that day :upside_down_face:

I only use my Shield as a client.

Shield TV Plex Player is broken too.
Dont bother buying one.

I bought a 2019 Shield TV Pro because the Tizen Plex Player is broken just to find out its broken too and I now have 2 broken players and have the joy of trying out movies in each of them until they work.

Would rather suggest switching the player instead of buying tons of devices just for plex to break them over time too.

My shield isn’t broken?

unless the problem is specific to 2019 model.

Perhaps if you are having problems, you might start a new thread with all your system details, client/server versions, and logs for when the problem occurs.

Seeing how well new threads about issues are handled, even with every possible detail included. Nah, not gonna waste my time, especially since there already are multiple threads with exactly my issues from just a few days old to months old.

Just saying, you can buy a new device and hope to get lucky or get a solution with less issues to begin with.

well, regardless of any issues with the shield (it certainly is not perfect), it is still the only mass media device that supports full 4k HDR+HD audio (truehd/atmos), and the new 2019 model has begun (partial) support for dolby vision.

no other device can provide the full audio/video experience.

ROKU and appletv4k can and do work great if HD audio is not a concern.

personally I stopped using any amazon devices a few years ago, because their reliability is crap (not just with plex).

chromecast, while useful in some scenarios, has never been a full media player.

and HTPC’s, if one can built and configure correctly, may perhaps exceed the capabilities of a shield, but at how much more cost in both money and time.

You probably need to offer more than it’s broken.
I have seen on Reddit that there are some issues with the tube version.
But the full blown 2019 Shield averages about 8 hours a day usage. I have 4K remuxes all the way down to SD Avi files. No one in this household has ever had a single issue.
Unlike the previous version.

Subtitle issues, EAC video stutter, playback freeze on resume.

Everything thats already been reported here, multiple times with details and logs. You wouldnt be talking about full blown or tube if you read what you quoted.

Be happy you dont have issues, I didnt have (or rather said didnt notice) issues when I first bought it either. And I bought it specifically for plex, specifically because plex was and still is broken on tizen (audio not playing, stuttering/crashes/artifacts when transcoding audio, even though server can handle video and audio transcoding, playback freeze on resume)

Things op describes as device issues seem rather like player issues and after my experience it is better to get a player without issues, rather than spending money on a new device, just to have other issues with the player again.

If plex actually tells people they are aware of issue x and an update will fix it around time y or that issue x1 is a device z issue and cant be fixed, then we can talk about possibly getting a new device to fix device issues. Yet at this point there are so many threads of the same issues over and over again and some of them beeing so old - you can highly doubt anyone actually cares.

A bugtracker has been suggested multiple times in the past and yet plex couldnt care less. They rather have users with issues post their issues here, thinking things will get fixed eventually - while in reality you have to run a small campaign to get noticed by anyone. And even then its mostly a mod with little to no insight on anything replying.

Ok, well this spiraled out of control quickly.

Going to try the Shield 2019. And I’m going to love it. Thanks for the advice, and the confusing dialog from some of you. Cheers!
