I have had an unRaid server running Plex for probably a decade now, but I still feel like a newbie and the upcoming question will probably prove it. I know this was probably a horrible practice, but my family and I are the only people leveraging the Plex server so they all had access to my Plex admin account. Well, after 10 years some data went missing and I suspect someone inadvertently deleted something via Plex.
To avoid this in the future I gave them all Friend accounts so that they could logon from their respective devices. But I’m wondering what the best practice is for myself? For all I know I could have been one the one to inadvertently deleted the data so I would like to keep myself from ever doing so. I would just send myself a friend request, but the admin account leverages my e-mail address so I would rather not do that. Does anyone know the best way to approach this? I’m assuming the admin account should remain reserved for only admin tasks…correct? If so, how should I set things up for a separate account so that I can also access my own Plex server, but with the restriction that I can’t delete anything?
There is a server library setting to prevent deletion through the interface. If enabled only the admin account will have the option. Shared accounts never have the option
Another option would be to give the user “plex” read-only access to the media directory. So if someone inadvertently deletes a file via the Plex interface thee server denies the action and you get a error message.
I do the file management (including deleting directories) on my Synology NAS web GUI only and not via Plex. I’ve give server users R/W permissions only if it’s absolutely necessary to prevent them from deleting files. And the trash bin is only visible to administrators so I can restore mistaken deleted files until the last day of the month (it empties trash bins at the 1st of the month at 12:00:00 am).
And last (but not least): don’t forget to create backups!
