What is the {edition} movie naming tag supposed to do?

Server Version#: 1.32.0.6973
Player Version#: Web 4.105.2

Library Agent: Plex Movie
Scanner Agent: Plex Movie

So I spotted the new naming convention tags on the help guide for adding multiple releases of the same movie. This should be excellent as it means I no longer have to add alternate cuts as movie extras.

I added a new movie to my library, with a release cut and directors cut, along with a behind the scenes documentary and a custom poster artwork. The files are as follows:

Alien Resurrection (1997) - 1080p.mkv
Alien Resurrection (1997) - 1080p {edition-Director’s Cut}.mkv
One Step Beyond-behindthescenes.mkv

I was assuming this would result in one entry in my movie library, with an option on the movie page to play the different releases, in the same manner as the Play Version option.

Instead, I now have two entries in my movie library. Neither are using the custom poster artwork, and the behind the scenes documentary isn’t listed in either of them.

Is this how this new feature is intended to work? Because I don’t see any difference between this and simply adding the movie twice as two separate movies.

IIRC you’ll need to place the editions in separate folders to let them properly pick up the extras.

Beyond that… as of today Editions offer basically just what you’ve described:

  • they show up as separate items in your library, each of them tagged with the edition name
  • each edition item will show an Other Editions of… hub
  • you can filter for specific editions

There’s a feature suggestion discussing an option to combine the different editions into a single library item

Edit:
here’s the link to the suggestion thread I had mentioned above.
