What NAS should I get if it's not used as a PMS?

I am using a NUC as my PMS and looking for a recommendation on a budget NAS to use along side with it without any bottlenecks, preferably a empty 2 bay NAS.

Currently I have a silent NUC MOD build in my bedroom and the sound of the USB External drives are very loud when I access the data and decided on getting a NAS to put in the other room with the router.

I am open to any suggestions if there is a cheaper or more effective route I can take.

Thanks

If you don’t plan on using the NAS as the actual server then I’d say the cheaper the better… Meaning the NAS will only be used to store the data. You might want to shop around the net(AND local stores!) for 2bay/4bay diskless NAS. I got lucky a few years ago and got 3 new, 4-bay ReadyNAS(RN-104) diskless NAS boxes for $169.99 each!!! It was a steal!!

But, what’s your budget anyway?

As suggested go cheap as it is only for storage. But do yourself a favour and get a 4 bay. You don’t need to fill it at the start. Start with 2 drives. Then add more later.

If you have a old unused PC laying around or that your can get your hands on, I would recommend building one with FreeNAS. FreeNAS.org I am using that as the OS for 2 boxes that are my NAS & PMS, but you can use them as just a NAS and your NUC as the PMS, I have experimented with that arrangement and it works perfectly. If you use the PC as just a NAS you won’t need a lot of horsepower in the box and everything is acessable to your LAN via SAMBA or NFS.

Thanks for the reply. My budget is anything under $150

Thanks! I just thought 4 bays would be way above my $150 budget so I didn’t consider anything above 2 bays.

I was thinking about using my unused old PC but I plan on keeping the system on 24/7 and I don’t want to rack up the electricity bill more than I have to also trying to save up on space since the place I am setting this up is another persons bedroom.

Wait and save some more money . Really, $150 will not get anything that won’t break in 6 months.

WYPFIWYG !

Any thoughts on a Raspberry pi 4 as a NAS just to hold data and transfer to and from my main plex server?

If that doesn’t work I guess saving up for a good NAS, find a good deal on a NAS, or just cave in and use a old computer.
