What Synology NAS to use?

Server Version#:N/A
Player Version#:N/A
I am in the market for a. Synology NAS I want to take stop using my Newly built desktop as the server since it’s overkill (I9, Gtx 1080ti) first I will play 99% of the media on a Roku ultra and 3 Premier+, the rest of time it will be my Pixel 3 xl then a 2017 iPad, I purchased Movavi to convert everything to the same format h264 MP4, my question is what Synology NAS is the best for this I plan on getting a 2 bay NAS and put either 2 8Tb or 2 10Tb WD reds or Whites shucked, becides the NAS is the H264/MP4 ideal for my set-up?

I’m using a DS718+ and can vouch for it. Running for close to a year now. No probs.
Supports hardware transcoding just fine.
As another poster said, use WD Reds or Ironwolf drives.
I’m using a pair of 8TB Reds.

Just a word of warning as someone who owns a 918+, its great for hosting a plex server on your home network and it does provide hardware acceleration for non-subtitled files. But as someone who watches a lot of anime and foreign movies and need subtitles, it’s not great when subtitles are required because hardware acceleration isn’t used and it bogs down the CPU. Its much slower even inside the home and especially if you’re watching outside of the home where more compression is required.

I personally host the Plex server on my desktop and use the NAS for file storage. Much much faster

Is there a UPS that can be monitored by the NAS? So if the power goes out when I’m not home it will either shut down or sleep to prevent data loss if/when the UPS runs out of power? I know my current ups has a optional USB cable that I can install it think (Power Shute) software on a PC and it will send a signal to the PC to save and shut down.

Yes, have a look here:

I found that but most of them are showing up on Amazon UK?? Or they are more than the NAS. Trying to find one $100 - $150 less if possible the NAS and drives are setting me back, even if it just shuts the NAS down in a couple minutes I don’t need it to keep it going any longer than that. I would use my APC but It was hit a few times and flakes out on me sometimes it will keep my desktop going for 30 minutes sometimes it just shuts off and kills the PC at the first brown out! So it’s done

I filtered that list to show only devices which were tested by Synology; clearing the “Tested by” column filter will list many more compatible devices. Perhaps that expanded list will show a more suitable device.

Ok thanks I wasn’t sure if it had to have a certain compatibly to work that way.

So I splurged on a Synology DiskStation DS718+ I should be set with Plex once I get the Plex pass. I’m putting 2 WD red 8 TB drives in it when it arrives Saturday
