What's happened to the NASA channel plugin?

It seems the NASA channel plugin isn't working. Anyone have a fix?

Thanks.

I would like to raise this issue as well. Was this plugin a "core" plugin developed by the Plex developers or a contributed plugin? Is it open source? How can we get this working again?

There are incredibly few “core” plugins. NASA is a community contributed plugin and, like all community plugins, is open-source. You’re welcome to take a look at the code for any of them on Github. Github.com/plexinc-plugins

So the code would be here:

https://github.com/plexinc-plugins/NASA.bundle

I managed to hack it to get it to work properly for the live NASA TV stream. Trying to figure out how best to share a fix... Probably just going to submit a patch via github. Interestingly, the code on github is NOT the same as the code you get when you install the plugin via the Plex web application...

Thanks for that, Victor.  Let us know the link to the fixes.

Hi guys, I've had upgrading/fixing the NASA channel on my list for a while now, but it's a huge channel and NASA has just gone and redesigned their site, and stated that things will be continuing to change through September, so I've given it lower priority for now.

The discrepancy between github and what's in the app store is a result of a half-baked upgrade attempt some months back. @victor73, which version did you fix?  If it was the store version can you just go ahead and share it on github and give me a link?  If it was the github version, just make a pull request there.

@mmccurdy, I cloned the code on github to replace the plugin code that I had installed on my Plex server to see if it worked better, but it didn't work for me. Since I figured that the github code was likely to be the latest version likely to be released, I modified that one to get my fix. I've add a pull request on github for it. At least I think I did since I'm not a git or github expert, but i think I did the right thing there... Note, that this patch isn't really an major "fix". It only allows me to watch the NASA TV and ISS live streams. I didn't try to fix the featured videos, or podcasts at all and they are likely still broken... In my opinion, the live streams are the features that users most want, especially when there is a launch or other major event going on. So those two features should be the ones to get the most emphasis. Not sure why Verizon FIOS doesn't add a NASA TV channel, but I'm done waiting for them to ever do it (especially considering that they could get the stream for free from NASA...).

Hey @victor73, I merged your request, and subsequently went through and did a massive hatchet job on the current channel which was in dire need of upgrading across the board.  So, now live streams and podcasts should work on most (all?) clients.  I also pushed the update, so the channel store version should be the same as the head of the github repo.

Thanks for your attention/help on this one!

Thanks very much mmccurdy!

You guys are awesome! I have to confess, I didn't really know what I was doing, but managed to make it work for my purposes. I intend to read up the documentation on plugin development so that I can do a better job next time (if that time ever comes). Thanks again mmccurdy!

Mmccurdy, where should I post a request to have Plex allow me to 'group' the items in the Plex-It queue?

Thanks.
