The best way to transcode on Plex is do not transcode at all. Get your files in a compatible format and you will never have to transcode again.

Ya but lets say just say i want to. I dont want a copy of all my 1080p in 720p. That would be way too much hdd space.

How are you thinking that an SSD is going to help with transcoding? Or be comparable in performance to hardware transcoding with a gpu?

About a third of my files are 1080p and they all direct play. It is not 720 vs 1080 that causes transcoding it is something else.

Though itwould be like ram disk transcoding. Sorry total nube at this.

When transcoding. Dosen’t it send a temp copy of the media its transcoding to ssd then close after? That being said wouldn’t you need enough space like a 2tb ssd nvme to run lets say 50 transcodes at the same time?

The transcoding disk hit isn’t too bad and you probably don’t have to think about it unless you are building your own Netflix server doing many simultaneous streams. However, if you can set it to a RAM disk you will save a bit of wear on your solid state drives.

Using a solid state drive or a RAM disk is NOT a substitute for hardware acceleration from an Nvidia or Intel GPU, though.

Oh, so you ARE rebuilding Netflix!

Ok so you say i need both? Am i understanding you correctly The m.2 drive to temp store media and gpu to trancode and for hardware accelerator?
And no netflix i just have a huge family and friend zone wth ■■■■ devices lol.

Im a overkill kind of guy. Running
rysen 9 5950x cpu
128gigs ram
On a asus rog strix x570-e gaming mobo. Hence “overkill”.

Even a ramdisk is not needed as a specified /tmp directory for transcoding, nor would an NVME be useful. They only benefit a very edge case sort of setup like cluster with iscsi cloud. ChuckPA posted about it a few days ago if you search for ramdisk

I was doing 16 simultaneous 4K HDR → SDR @ 720p transcodes today with PGS and SRT subs on a Mac Studio using the forum Transcoder Preview PMS version, 35 W at the wall outlet, 23% cpu, 44 GB of RAM used, and an idle fan. I was reading from a single NVME 1TB 50% full.

Ok so is there a way to unlock a nvidia card to transcode more than two streams in windows? And not just unraid.
