Well, for example I can’t play FLAC sound + any kind of external on internal subtitles on Plex without transcoding while native player works just fine. I’m sure it’s not just that.
Why not make them all in MEL, if you have already discovered how to convert them (FEL → MEL)?
How do you do that? I can play DV MEL but not DV FEL, so if there’s a way to convert FEL to MEL I would really like to know.
I don’t know the details.
But on the makemkv forum they comment on it several times.
But they also say that the process is “complex” for now.
I can’t tell you much more.
Found it. Thanks!
I have watched few titles of FEL and MEL on my shield pro and CX and I honestly can’t differentiate between picture quality or brightness. Not sure if shield is not outputting FEL correctly or it’s just me though.
Just thought I’d add my current tests/observations. I’ve got a Sony A8H TV (with Android TV built-in) and running the stock Plex app from Google Play Store (Version 8.11.0.22186)
I’ve downloaded a few sample DV videos from various sources (just sample files, trailers, etc.) and have gotten a few to successfully play DV.
Note - I don’t have an ATMOS compatible soundbar so not testing audio, just video.
Edit: Just did some more testing. I’ve got a Firestick 4K and some videos will trigger the TV into DV mode but then I get a black screen.
On the built-in Android TV app, these same videos don’t trigger DV at all (although play OK).
So definitely some differences between 4K Firestick and Android TV app on my Sony A8H
Reading some other forums posts on here and now it’s got me wondering if what I’m seeing is “real” Dolby Vision or rather just HDR. Would be nice if the app would indicate - TV seems to think so but how does one really know for sure?
Not entirely unfortunately…I found out initially that the 4K Firestick was stuck in 1080p mode but the TV was picking up everything from it as DV (even when on the Firestick main menu).
On another note, I was able to download a DV version of LOTR, along with a non-DV version (both 4K) and the Plex app on the TV is picking up the difference. Still trying to see if my aging eyes can see the difference though lol.
Unsure if this has been addressed but is it normal to get the HDR icon appear at the start rather than the Dolby Vision icon with Dolby Vision 4K MP4s on the LG CX? I’m streaming DV content onto a Shield TV 2019 Pro on an OLED 48CX and the content plays fine it just displays the HDR logo rather than the DV one.
As long as you’re 100% sure your file includes DV content (I recently re-ripped my entire 4K UHD library with the newest version of MakeMKV that can pick up the DV data), I’ve found that I almost always have to restart playback (sometimes 2-3 times) for Plex to “pick up” the DV flag.
If I start a movie and see the “buffering” wheel at all, that is always a 100% indicator that Plex will miss the DV flag, and I’ll see the HDR banner on my LG CX.
But if I hit “Back” on the remote and then “Play” again, and if the file doesn’t buffer again before beginning playback, I’ll get the DV banner on my LG CX (and Dolby Atmos sound on supported movies).
It’s frustrating in its inconsistency and unreliability (I also use the Shield TV 2019 Pro on a wired Gigabit Ethernet connection, and using a Denon AV receiver), but I’m glad I can get DV and Atmos at all now, since it just wasn’t possible even a few months ago. Hopefully it’s just a matter of time for Plex developers to iron out the kinks in the implementation so that the DV flag is picked up 100% of time on initial playback.
100% bud. Just to clarify on the 2019 Pro Shield it should definitely display DV right? I wondered if it was displaying just wasn’t showing the correct logo but looks like I’ll try restarting a few times. On a different issue I randomly get dolby atmos logos appearing during playback…very frustrating.
Yes, using a 2019 Pro Shield I see the DV banner on the LG CX (usually after restarting playback 2-3 times).
That’s the DOVI decoder on the Shield crashing. Not specific to our app, I’m afraid. We’d need Nvidia to solve this.
Dave, do you know if NVIDIA is aware of this issue and is actively working to address it, or is it still something Plex users need to be hounding them about through their Customer Service email?
I believe they know, but I can follow up internally with our own contacts there. No need to hound them.
NVIDIA released Shield Experience 8.2.2 today. Unfortunately no mention of DV fixes in any of the release notes…
We appreciate that Dave, thanks!
I have an Nvidia Shield 2019 Pro and Dolby Vision is working correctly using MakeMKV. I’ve read people using Handbrake as well when ripping to cut down file size. I’ve never used Handbreak. Would I lose Dolby vision or atmos of using Handbreak? Is it better to leave the 4K Dolby vision mkv file uncompressed?
Handbrake doesn’t preserve HDR or Dolby Vision at this time.
Ok, thank you.
Is it better to leave uncompressed anyway for best quality?
