Currently, Plex on Nvidia Shield 2019 is able to play single layer Dolby Vision on .mp4 and .ts files. Recently, a method has been discovered which allows to get that into a MKV container as well with the codec MpegH HEVC Main10@L5.1 (dvhe.07.06 BL+EL+RPU FEL). Is there any chance to add support to ExoPlayer so it can handle dolby vision enabled MKVs as it does with .mp4 and .ts on licensed hardware like Shield 2019?
Btw, there is another thing to fix, PGS on .ts files with Dolby Vision, it’s currently failing and probably will happen the same with MKV if support is added.
Please add support for this! Dolby Vision MKV support will solidify PLEX as the app to use for managing your digital movie library. Please increase the priority of this request =)
The sad part is that the creator of MakeMKV says it is a one hour task to get it implemented.
This means that Plex could implement it easily themselves in their custom version of exoplayer, without having to spend a lot of time on it!
I don’t know if that’s necessarily sad - I’d say it’s good news if anything! Hopefully the Plex devs will step up and make this happen. That said, we need this to happen on Plex via Apple TV 4K as well.
I think it doesn’t depend of them, since they are relying on ExoPlayer on Android, the moment ExoPlayer suppor it Plex will do too. ExoPlayer has accepted the feature request with low priority.
Anyway, we need first official support on MKV I mean that MKV correctly identify that it contains a video stream with DV and they are also discussing about that in other opened issue on matroska’s Github.
