When Selecting Home I get " Something went wrong " error

Server Version#: 4.123.2
Player Version#:1.40.0.7998

I can replicate this error every time…

I open plex on the PC.
Left hand column I select “more”

I view a friends server

I then go to the top and select my media server

I then go to the top and select pinned

I now select “Home” and the error appears.

If I do this ( except view friends server ) on the server I just get a spinning wheel

Please stop Plex

Using FileStation, navigate to PlexMediaServer/AppData/Plex Media Server

Right-click ‘Logs’ → ‘Compress to Logs.zip’

Download that zip and attach here.

“Something went wrong” is the browser telling you things are too slow.
There is either a real error or the NAS is super busy.

Logs.zip (4.5 MB)

Please find attached the latest set of log files

I also have a recent Plex Media Server.2.log file but that is 10Mb and to big to send

Thanks for the logs.

What I’m seeing is:

  1. The server is getting the requests and responding within 1 second (usually well within fractions of a second)

  2. The biggest issue it when communicating with the web player. 192.168.120.81
Either the network connection is slow or that browser is slow.

Many thanks for your input Chuck.

The windows PC is an HP Elitedesk mini, I have moved the network cable to a Unifi managed switch, no change.

I will try it from another computer later.

Be aware that if I launch Plex by default it comes up with the home page. I can select any option ( Films, TV etc ) and go back to the home and all works fine.
If I then select more and select my Media server I see what I would on the home page, now if I select < Pinned and then Home I get the message "Something went wrong " an unexpected error occured.

On the server, when I launch Plex I get the spinning wheel ( home ) If I then select more and then my media server I have the home page (as I understand it)

It just looks like when I go to pinned Home I have the error.

At the moment the server is just rebuilding the “Movies” as these or on another server linked by a shared directory. I was just trying to eliminate what I see as an abnormality in the default setup.

It made no difference.

I do not have this problem on the Television, and that is what matters. I can live with this problem, just not use the < pinned function

The TV is is usually the most problematic.

If you can confirm everything works from the TV but not the computer

  1. Clear the browser’s cache and data
  2. Close the browser (all tabs & windows)
  3. Restart the computer to force everything to restart

If this doesn’t resolve the problem then you must ask yourself “just how weak is this mini PC?”

Thanks again Chuck

I have done all of the above. My next move is to try an older version of Plex.

The computer is

I would have thought it could handle this.

PC and Servers are plugged into the same managed hub at the moment.

If no one else has a problem then it must be specific to my setup, I can operate using the server shortcut and keeping away from the < pinned link.

Again thanks for trying

Version 1-64-2-3546 has no problems, I will work my way up.

Can I stop auto updates on windows?

Ok 1-79-1-3984 works fine but if I install 1-82-2-3905 it fails

I think I have found out how to alter plex.ini to stop updates. If it works

Are you referring to the APP for windows or the browser ??

I am Synology and Linux here. There’s no means for me to support any Windows apps but I can get someone to take over

Good Evening Chuck

By the looks of it I have two problems on my system.

The Windows App that was giving me the error message and the server that has the spinning wheel on the Home page.

I have cured my windows error by going back a full version on the windows App.

I assume that if I went back on the Synology Server version I may cure that problem also.

Previously I was under the impression it was just one fault but if I can eliminate the windows problem by going back a version I can only come to the conclusion that all the latest updates have bloated the Plex application and have caused problems for me.

I thought that the server was man enough for the job, but obviously not

Again many thanks for all your recommendations, but I think Plex may just be trying to do to much.

I am going to put an old version on my standby server ( Identical specification ) and point all the folders to my primary server and see if I still have problems.

This will not be for a couple of days as I am tied up on another project.

Thanks again

Good Morning Chuck

I had a window of opportunity to test out going back a version.

I am now running V 1.32.8.7639 (Web V 4.116.1) and all looks fine. My problem of never getting the home page has gone.

If I upgrade then I get the problem back.

Looks like I will be sticking with this version

Thanks again

Update:-

I see that in the change log for V 1.40.1.8173 a fix has been made for:-

Home Screen content would not load when unauthenticated

even though I cannot see why this would affect me I am hoping that it is somehow related and I will be able to update in the future

Great news, this bug was my problem by the look of it.

Version 1.40.1.8227 has been released

Now running Version 1.40.1.8227 and the “Home” problem is no longer there.

That is the server version fixed so I will wait a bit before updating the player

I won’t bother updating this call anymore as I appear to be the only one affected.
