When Storage is direct connected to client, does it go through router first?

I didn’t know where to put this, so I’m sorry if this is in the wrong area. Simple question: I have a Nvidia Shield Pro running PMS. It has the media HDD direct connected. When playing media, does it send the media back to the router to receive it yet again to play it? If so, would it create less network traffic if the drive was direct connected to the router instead? Hypothetically only a downstream instead of an up then down stream back to the same device?

This came up while file sharing tonight as the drive theoretically doesn’t have to go to the router, but while my network was congested, it took FOREVER to play a movie.

The router acts only as a WiFi access point.

Data flow is such:
Hard drive
Plex server
Network
Plex client

Clients never access the media storage directly. They get all the data through the server.

No.

As OttoKerner mentions, the client talks to the server via the network. However, since both are on the same device, the packets never leave the Shield.
