Thanks Andy.
If that is the case its probably why i get all sorts of problems after loading the plex server and scanning 20,000 episodes.
But I have seen seen plenty of FAQ’s asking about the 16gb version and all say it will work on that model as well
As far is i know it currently is not possible to store metadata on adopted storage like SD Cards, right? What about changing the transcode folder to an SD card? Any News by Plex Employees if this will be possible in the future?

It does work on the 16gb model, but not with a large library.

You can change the transcoder folder.
Plex employees said it’s been discussed with NVidia to fund a way to move metadata elsewhere, and show the plugin folder, but they’re going to have to wait to see what they can do together. So in the end, no promise was made.

If the device is rooted and we know the folder should be easy to symlink it.
First off I’m not an Android app programmer but I would think it would be easy enough for the Plex team to update the app the use the Android/data directory on the adopted storage / sdcard for PMS’s data directory. Other apps like Kodi/SPMC use this directory for the data directory which include plugins, metadata, etc… The only reasons I can think of for them not wanting to move / allow use to define a different data directory are:
-
NVidia requirement as a way to push people to buy their Pro model if you have really large libraries which would be a pretty crappy of them.
-
Worries about performance issues if people are using really crappy SDCards or USB drives as adopted storage. Basically they don’t want to deal with people bitching that PMS is slow or laggy which is due to their use of crappy USB drives / SDcards and not because PMS on the Shield TV sucks. Personally I’d say make the data directory user selectable and if they change it away from internal, pop up a warning box saying this might cause performance issues so the user basically has to acknowledge they could be breaking things.
-
Plex placed the data directory on protected internal storage because they are storing something else in there they don’t want people to access. This would be silly since people can root and get access to this directory if they really wanted to and get whatever secret they are trying to hide. It doesn’t make sense to protect / restrict access on Android TV if all other platforms don’t restrict data directory access.
There might be other reasons but these to me seem to be the most logical / likely outside of just not thinking about using the adopted storage / sdcard to begin with. I personally hope it’s #2 and that they will let the user decide to break things by using crappy SDcards / USB drives.

You’d think that, but people have tried and failed… I’m not rooted so I wouldn’t know.

What’s the folder? I’ll give it a shot and if it works I’ll post instructions.

It’s likely somewhere in /data
OK, the place where Plex appears to store media data is here. /data/media/0/Plex Media Server
However, I am not sure what is the mount point or folder for the adopted sdcard. Anyone?
Does the HDHRViewer plugin create its own logs?

My Adopted USB3 hard drive is located in /storage/emulatated/0/ which is the same as /sdcard or /storage/self/primary or /mnt/user/0/primary (symlinks)
I’ve attached the two log files from a failed effort to play the videos. Any ideas?
Found the plugins log folder on the Nvidia Shield TV at “/data/data/com.plexapp.mediaserver.smb/Plex Media Server/Logs/PMS Plugin Logs/”
Has anyone been able to successfully run the trakt plugin? I’ve only heard people saying “in theory if you have root”, but no one confirmed to have done it. That’s the main thing that’s keeping me from buying a shield, can’t live without trakt
I don’t know about rooting but until plex or Nvidia update, there is no access to the PMS folder. And that includes the plug ins folder.
I am waiting also…
The trakt plugin is running just fine for me:
But be aware that at this time it is not easy to install a Plex plugin manually: You need a rooted device, SSH and some basic knowledge about SELinux in enforcing mode.

It would be nice if you could write a how to… That´s what I am exactly missing… I need the watched status also on my shield… ![]()

Good luck with the rooting…
Let us know how it goes.
Me - I am waiting for nvidia 3.3 but it might be a plex update that gets us access to the PMS folder.
Actually that’s a good question - I will ask it.
There’s a tutorial on how to root the STV on nvidiashieldzone.com
What you do after that to get trakt working, I don’t know
Plex media server is now up to 1.0.3.273 on nvidia shield tv, and the hdhr viewer channel is still not working. You can stream a sample video but no live channels.
Want this to work. Any chance plex as a company would take on this task?
