6 likes is disappointing!
I really thought this was a major issue - apparently not
With that sort of support we may never get access to PMS folder.
Damn it!!
I have a huge (~3000 TV programmes) plex server on Linux Ubuntu that I’d like to move to an Nvidia shield. In particular I have 66Gb of video thumbnails that has taken many many hours of background transcoding to produce, as well as lots of custom posters.
I too need the ability to migrate my PMS to an Nvidia shield.
I also have been waiting and hoping for a update to this it is ridiculous they pushed nvidia shields on ads and media only to have it stonewalled at the most important part! I don’t have as huge of a library as some but it is still large enough not to fit on the 16 GB internals without maxing it out, Not to mention that i have alot of edited data that i manually added myself when tvdb indexes things like they are on crack sometimes with certain shows and mark shows wrong, So even if i could put my external drive on and let the shield re index all my data it wouldn’t be right on half my stuff anyway so i need to be able to copy my data from pc over to the shield.
I like others was suckered into the hype about shield running pms in ads and media and bought one if i had known it run it half assed and not allow you to copy and change data save location i wouldn’t have bought a shield in the first place and just stuck using my firetv or roku’s with pms running on pc.
I am 1. a Plex Pass member 2. a member of the Nvidia Shield Insider program. Given those facts, I’ve been able to watch the 3 round tables Plex did, and listen to a conference call Nvidia did with Plex and some members of the program.
Plex and Nvidia mentionned more than once they are aware of the issue, and they are working on a fix. It seems the issue comes from the way permissions are handled in Android, and the fact that Plex Media Server was added as a system app. They didn’t give an ETA, of course, but it’s one of the main things they’re working on right now.
Danjames92,
Does that mean you are 24y.o.?
I don’t know you but you come across to me as a smart ■■■■.
Have you read all the posts ?
It was agreed it is likely a Nvidia issue and If you noticed I asked if nvidia people might be reading this post to take note of this issue.
Thank you very much KarlDag, that is extremely good to know.
For those that are stuck with a 16GB Shield that’s full; Make sure your Video Thumbnail previews are turned off in your library settings and you have deleted the existing Video Thumbnails through the Plex admin page.
I dont see why this is so hard to fix. 1) Plex changes where it installs itself to. 2) Nvidia specifically modifies the directory Plex installs itself to in such a way that users can access it (easier would be to adjust permissions on the directory so you dont need root to modify/access it, then symlink it to somewhere like /Android/Plex. We DO have access and full control over the PMS folders on rooted devices, so I dont understand what the holdup is. Im assuming Plex blames Nvidia and Nvidia blames Plex, and the first to actually work on a “fix” would effectively be admitting fault.

Plex can’t modify the permissions of the internal data directory to allow for non-root access since the Plex App it self doesn’t have root permissions to make those changes. This is an Android Security policy thing and not a Plex thing for the internal data directory.
Plex can / should be able to tell the Plex App to use adopted storage and/or let use define a custom path for the data directory as long as the Plex App has permission to access (read and write) to said path though.

I also would like this, just got my shield and trying to migrate… Looks like I’ll have to start from scratch now…
Yep no way of migrating .
I have my shield pro setup waiting for the update.
But at noted noway of moving the DB with my watched media
AND
There are missing movies and TV shows when I compare the number with my NAS version of PMS.
