I am looking to get a NAS for my home and was considering Synology. I am wondering which would be better if I want to run PLEX direct from the NAS?
DS418
DS920+
You might want to take a look at the NAS compatibility matrix to get an impression what performance to expect from each.
Based on the list, both NAS have a CPU that will be able to transcode 720p media and some 1080p content. The DS920+ has an Intel CPU which also supports HW accelerated transcoding with Plex.

I did look at the compatibility list. I am not a video expert and wanted the opinions of the users that know more than me. Is the hardware transcoding a big enough deal to spend almost $200 more on it?
Yes, 100% night and day different when using hardware transcoding.
So now I am faced with another comparison, wait for the 922+, purchase the 1522+ now, or just go with the current 920+. All will be just fine with the network storage/backup portion, but what about Plex? Which is better suited to run Plex on?
