And is there a reason not to provide a guide on the download page, or linked from it, that allows Synology users to look up which version they should download?
I’m trying to download the proper version of Plex for Synology DSM 7 (upgrading from DSM 6 to DSM 7), and I’m also having some trouble identifying the proper package version.
After selecting DSM 7 on the Plex Downloads page, the following package options are offered: Intel 32-bit, Intel 64-bit, ARMv8, ARMv7 (for x13 and most x14), and ARMv7 (for most x15, x16, x17, and x18).
My Synology NAS is model DS420j with a Realtek RTD1296 processor. The Plex NAS Compatibility guide, as well as previous package installation files I had for DSM 6, indicate that this CPU is an aarch64 type.
My first instinct was to say that aarch64 is close enough to the “Intel 64-bit” package option, and pick that one. However, I know that Realtek is not Intel, and after doing some extensive Googling, it looks like aarch64 may fall under the ARMv8 classification. But after more searching through the Plex NAS Compatibility guide, I see that some models list “ARMv8 (Realtek 1296)” while my model specifically lists “aarch64 (Realtek 1296)”, which makes me think that aarch64 is different than ARMv8.
I’d feel a lot more confident if somebody who knows more about this than I do could confirm one way or another. Thanks in advance for your help.
There are two easy ways to confirm
-
Google “What CPU Synology” and look up your model on the Synology article
-
The second is to look at the Plex NAS Compatibility Guide.
aarch64 = “ARM architecture 64 bit” which is ARMv8. ARMv8 is the first 64 bit ARM processor.
Thanks–I had tried those two methods, but was not entirely confident making a definitive connection between the aarch64 designation listed for my NAS model and the ARMv8 designation on the Plex Downloads page. I appreciate your help to confirm.
