Synology NAS DS718+ Which Plex package to install

Server Version#:DSM 6,2+
Player Version#:

I’m confused, I have a synology DS718+ and the package within DSM keeps failing upon installation attempts. So I went to Plex downloads to get the latest package and do a manual install, however, there are 2 different packages according to the descriptions that seem to apply to the DS718+. It has a 64-bit Celeron processor so that fits that package description, but there is also an ARM package that is for the X18 series as well.
So which one is the correct one?

Thanks

To add to Trumpy,

One of the ARMv8 models is the DS418j. I have one of these as my development system.

Yes, my Nas does say it is a Celeron 64 bit.
So here is the interesting part.
the Plex Web server informs me that an update is needed even though Synology Package manager does not show an update is needed yet and the Pex Web server has given me the download and install manually link which gives me the 1.15.6.1079 _X86_64 version package.

From the downloads page on Plex support site the Celeron 64 bit will download the ARM package 1.15.8.1163-005053bb5-ARM7hF_neon.spk and the other link that lists my Nas as falling into the x18 series downloads has the same package number but without the ARM7hf at the end of it.

I’ve always just trusted the Plex web interface in the past and just used what it handed me on the other 2 PLex servers I have running, but the last install for this particular DS718+ “which would have been the first update from outside of the package manager” for the DS718+ made it lock up or not be accessable and often just turns the service off on its own within the DSM. So it seems Synology is not keeping up with Plex updates to offer them via the package manager. So the discrepency in the different downloads is confusing.
You would think the Web interface for Plex would always choose the correct package over anything else.

The Synology Package Center only hosts the 32-bit version of PMS, which will not run on the DS718+.

You must use the x64 version downloaded directly from Plex.

As you are not using the version from the Synology Package Center, it will not know when an update is available.

To know when an update is available, you have two options:

  1. Go to PMS Settings → General in Plex Web or Plex Media Player.
  2. Subscribe to (Watch) the PMS announcement thread. You will be notified when a new version is available. To subscribe to the thread, scroll to the bottom and change the status from ‘Normal’ to ‘Watch.’

For additional info, see Q1 - Q3 in the Synology FAQ.

Correct. There’s a long thread somewhere with all the details. Short answer: Synology Politics.

You’re making this too difficult. Your NAS has a 64-bit Intel CPU. You download the Intel 64-bit package.

If you’re in PMS Settings → General and click on the download button, it will download the correct package automatically.

If you’re going to the Plex.tv download page, simply choose the Intel 64-bit package.

Thanks for you help and clairifications Ford,
My quiery was not to complicate things, but to simplify and understand why there are different resorces in order to determin which was the correct one to be the most reliable and stable one.
I had no idea what synology was giving me, they dont tell you what version it is, then when I updated via the PMS is when it crashed. So I completly uninstalled it and reinstalled it via package manager and today used the celeron 64 bit install directly from Plex to update it to the latest version because the synology package was obviously was way behind. It seems to be much more resposive and faster now.
