Who does transcoding in Plex cloud

I have plex pass and linked up a gmail account to test it. My question is who does the transcoding? If I sync a file to the cloud who does the transcoding?

I have a server offsite that does the downloading and syncs to the cloud. I’d prefer to bypass that server on transcode and send.

Currently the setup is: plex offsite -> xbox One client.
future ideal setup would be: plex offsite -> google drive -> ??? perhaps plex server onsite?

The bandwidth from the plex offsite server leaves more to be desired. My single threaded bandwidth is about 12Mpbs whereas my single threaded bandwidth from Google is about 40Mbps.

You can see why I want to avoid the offsite server sending any traffic

If you are using the invite only Plex Cloud then the transcoding would be done by the Plex Cloud server.
If the media you are using is able to DirectPlay to your client then the Plex Cloud server is essentially bypassed as the media streams to you directly from the Cloud Provider.

All my test files from my remote server are still “Waiting to Upload”

Sounds like you are using Cloud Sync and not the Plex Cloud as listed above by @hthighway.

There are a lot of issue with Cloud Sync. I could never get it to work personally. When you send a file to Cloud Sync, it is going to transcode on your local server first then upload it to your cloud provider.

Honestly i would wait for an invite to Plex Cloud, as that will do exactly what you are looking for.

@hthighway is it possible to create a plex home using Plex Cloud and share your stuff with family? Also is there support for channels? need trakt support

Plex Cloud works just like a local server, yes you can assign friends and family to use your server.

At work, so firewall blocking the normal servers, but as you can see, Plex cloud is listed there and selectable.

Found out I needed to refresh my token on the remote server and then allow remote access.

fixed!
