I do software tech support all day, every day. Been doing it for 30+ years…
Things don’t “suddenly” change without something being modified.
“I” am the only one with Admin rights to the system, and ZERO changes other than the software update happened before this started to do this.
PLEX changed something…or had some kind of undocumented feature happen because of the upgrade. I see it all the time with Microsoft…server updates happen and the system reboots and suddenly it changed the IP from fixed to DHCP and nobody can access the server.
Have a nice day…
Shutting off external content has fixed it. We don’t stream from Plex anyway…I have apps on the TV for that.
So is this statement true or false?
If you have turned OFF external content and you are no longer seeing adds, then the adds that you did see came from external content, and now that you have turned OFF the external content, you are no longer seeing adds.
If this really did happen and can be replicated, then Plex will have to fix it…
This is why I asked if you can replicate it, to which you replied…
Yes, I could reproduce it…
Then please do… Please replicate it, document it on here, and Plex will fix it…
However it is very likely you will not be able to replicate it without turning external content back on.
I’m sure you’re right…
I’m getting ready for a convention in Vegas next week and I can’t be bothered to back it up and do all the documentation right now. I’ve got too much stuff to do for my job right now to hassle with my personal media server.
Earlier, you said you had “resumed” playback on the video that showed the ads. Did you hit resume from within the library or from one of the rows (we call them hubs) on the Homepage.
If you had the external sources enabled before, and the video you started watching from your server is also available from Plex, you may see the Plex version in things like the Continue Watching hub. Hitting resume would then play from Plex and not your server. This has caused confusion for many.
Plex does have the Dick Van Dyke show.

Just so I understand the work flow. You start watching something from your personal library, stop and then later resume from CW hub. If this item is also on plex on-demand, and you have external sources enabled then plex will prioritise their content rather than what was initially started from your personal library?

I went at it from 2 different directions. I first just hit Resume after the initial advert. and a few minutes later had yet another ad come up.
Then I went directly to the TV Shows Library, went into the season and found the episode and then played it from the point it paused…and yet another advert came up after a bit…which is when I started to get annoyed.
Why would Plex show the Plex version of a specific media in Continue watching if the specific media was started from the library? That isn’t cool.
The episode displayed as the guilty party is S01E01
And what brings you to this conclusion?
I’m not sure what you think these images prove but I don’t think they prove anything. The first image shows that that Dick Van Dyke episode was played but it in no way showed where it was played from (Plex ad-supported stream or local video with no ads).
The second image shows a similarly named video in your library but it doesn’t show that it was the one that was played.
IOW it doesn’t follow from those images - there’s not enough info.
Another way to try to prove this might be to play the video with the ads. Stop the video. Go into your library and rename that file or move it to someplace outside of Plex’s reach. Then go back and attempt to play the video with ads. If it plays then you just verified that Plex is not playing your local file anymore because it ain’t there!
The listing of videos played are hot-links. I select the video link and it takes me to the episode IN MY LIBRARY.
The last picture is the file path for that file…and it clearly shows it IS in my library.

Not quite. Let me back up a bit. There is another Plex feature that may be in play called Watch State Sync, https://support.plex.tv/articles/sync-watch-state-and-ratings/. This tracks what you’ve watched. We don’t track the progress, only when something is done. So lets say you watched episode 4 of a show. If Plex has that show, we will offer episode 5 on the Continue Watching hub (with my previous comments in mind). So you may think this Episode 5 you see is from your server, but it may not be. The order these show up in Continue watching is based on when and where you watched the previous episode, so if it’s been a little while since you watched the previous episode, the one from your server may be further down the list, while the one from Plex may be earlier. Or like I said earlier, you may be seeing only the one from Plex.

I’m unclear on this. We don’t have a “resume” option after an ad plays. It should just continue playing. If you were playing from Plex, this is the expected flow. There is an ad in the beginning, then ads every so often.
Then I went directly to the TV Shows Library, went into the season and found the episode and then played it from the point it paused…and yet another advert came up after a bit…which is when I started to get annoyed.
This is disconcerting. If you play specifically from your library, you should not be getting the Plex version. When you have time, if you can reproduce and get me the Web logs, I’d be happy to take a look.
